Trump Nominee for Science Post Thinks Homosexuality is a Choice

Donald Trump has nominated Sam Clovis, a conservative radio host, to be the “chief scientist” for U.S. Department of Agriculture. We already knew he isn’t a scientist, which is problematic enough in this position, but now we’re learning that his beliefs about homosexuality are rooted in bigotry and not evidence.

Clovis has not only said being gay is a choice but also that laws allowing same-sex marriage could lead to the legalization of pedophilia, according to CNN’s KFile report.

“Someone who engages in LGBT behavior — I don’t know what the science is on this, I think it’s still out — but as far as we know, LGBT behavior is a choice they make, Clovis says in a video obtained by CNN’s KFile. “So we’re being asked to provide Constitutional protections for behavior, a choice in behavior as opposed to a primary characteristic.”

Clovis also said there’s “no equivalency there between the civil rights issue associated between those protected classes and the civil rights of someone who engages in a particular behavior.”

“Follow the logic, if you engage in a particular behavior, what also becomes protected? If we protect LGBT behavior, what other behaviors are we going to protect? Are we going to protect pedophilia? Are we going to protect polyamorous marriage relationships? Are we going to protect people who have fetishes? What’s the logical extension of this? It can’t be that we’re going to protect LGBT and then we’ll pull up the ladder. That’s not going to happen, it defies logic. We’re not thinking the consequences of these decisions through.”

To put that another way, Clovis thinks there’s a slippery slope from legalizing same-sex marriage to sexually assaulting a child. Like a high number of conservative Christians, he doesn’t seem to understand the importance of consent.

The Supreme Court legalized marriage equality in 2015. No one has legally married a child, and pedophilia is still a crime, just as it should be. I guess Clovis thinks that’s going to change.

He actually went even further in his anti-LGBT rhetoric. In a blog post from 2012, he said he supported the right of businesses to discriminate against LGBT applicants.

On the other hand, businesses and their owners should be able to make decisions about who is employed if hiring people who do not behave in accordance with some deeply held religious belief system is at issue. Just as the government should not force business owners or enterprises to provide contraceptives or morning-after pills because of religious beliefs, the government should not be in charge of hiring practices, either. Religious freedom, perhaps the most fundamental of all protected freedoms, must be free of government interference.

Clovis is a non-scientist, a political commentator, and a bigot who just got tapped to be the chief scientist for the Department of Agriculture. Democrats are absolutely right to point out he is absolutely unqualified for this job. But what else would you expect from a President also unqualified for his?
