Senate hopeful Roy Moore, the Alabama Christian who thinks his God’s law ought to apply to everyone, is back in the news for saying something both religious and absurd.
According to a speech posted on YouTube by Studio 25 productions last month, and reported by CNN, Moore blamed shootings and killings on a lack of mandatory Christian indoctrination in public schools.
You wonder why we’re having shootings and killings here in 2017? Because we’ve asked for it. We’ve taken God out of everything. We’ve taken prayer out of school. We’ve taken prayer out of council meetings…
He’s wrong on so many levels. Shootings aren’t the result of atheism; we know that because the killers often admit other motives. Violence occurred before mandatory Christian prayers were stopped at public schools. Even after the Supreme Court stepped in, prayers never went away since students and teachers have always had the right to pray on their own. Students have every right to form Bible clubs and pray around the flagpole. City council members can pray before meetings.Moore, a former Alabama Chief Justice, surely knows all of this. But he requires his religion — and only his religion — to be shoved down everybody’s throat. Anything less is considered anti-Christian censorship
But if Donald Trump won over evangelicals by lying about what was at stake for them in the last election, then Moore’s going to lie to them too. His God doesn’t have a problem with that.
The GOP runoff takes place on Tuesday, and Moore holds a lead over the incumbent Republican Luther Strange. The winner is all but assured of taking the seat later this year.
