Mormon Leader: Yep, We Still Think Gay Marriage Is the Worst

In case you were thinking the Mormon Church had gotten any more humane and decent — maybe all that positive press from allowing caffeinated drinks in the BYU dining hall gave them ideas — you would be wrong.

Yesterday, during a Mormon conference, one of the highest ranking Church members reaffirmed the religion’s stance that gay people shouldn’t have the right to get married.

Dallin H. Oaks, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, referred to the acceptance of marriage equality in society as a mark of a “declining world.”

“We have witnessed a rapid and increasing public acceptance of cohabitation without marriage and same-sex marriage. The corresponding media advocacy, education, and even occupational requirements pose difficult challenges for Latter-day Saints,” Oaks said. “We must try to balance the competing demands of following the gospel law in our personal lives and teachings even as we seek to show love for all.”

This is the same Church that will not only kick you out for being in a committed same-sex relationship, but also kick out the children of gay couples unless they disavow their parents’ marriage. After that announcement was made, thousands of people sent their letters of resignation to the Church in a beautiful mass protest.

The question now is whether more will resign in the wake of Oaks’ bigotry. Some online are already announcing their exits or at least expressing their disappointment that a Mormon leader was beating a dead horse.

But maybe the best response came from a Redditor quick to point out the irony of a Mormon leader talking about traditional marriage:
