Televangelist Jim Bakker, who knows a thing or two about scandals that result in prison sentences, is trying to prepare his base for whenever Donald Trump is found guilty of wrongdoing. Because Trump can do no wrong in their eyes, and any impeachment proceedings would obviously be invalid from the get-go, Bakker is setting the stage for a Christian-led riot.
“Trump is not crazy,” Bakker bellowed. “They want him to be crazy because they want to impeach him. There is nothing they can impeach him over because this thing with the collusion with Russia they can’t prove, but they want to say this man is crazy. They’re trying to get doctors to say the president is crazy.”
“I’ll tell you what,” he continued. “If they go through with that, there will be a riot in the United States of America and you’re going to find little old ladies rioting, you’re going to find the church people out rioting because they’re not going to take it any more. This is stupid and insanity what is going on in our country right now.”
The scary thing is that I don’t think Bakker’s far off from the truth. Given how evangelical Christians have supported Trump before, during, and after his election, I have no doubt they’ll flip out if he’s impeached. After all, that means their man in office won’t be around to nominate their anti-abortion judges anymore. (Though they might have a President Mike Pence, which they would surely welcome.)
But let them riot. Let’s get Christians on camera defending a president who couldn’t even rise above his already-low bar. They’ve already lost plenty credibility for defending a racist, sexist, ignorant buffoon; why would impeachment be any different?
If Trump goes down, may he take his evangelical base down with him.
