Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who denied gay couples their legal marriage licenses because Jesus told her not to do her job, says she’ll be running for re-election next year.
It’ll be her first time facing voters since before the controversy erupted and the first time taxpayers can get revenge for having to pay nearly $225,000 to cover her legal fees.
Mat Staver, founder of the Florida-based law firm Liberty Counsel, which represented Davis during the monthslong controversy, confirmed Tuesday that she will seek a second term. He said Davis was unavailable for comment because of a medical procedure.
Maybe she’s replacing the heart she lost a few years ago.
Staver added that the money for her legal bills wouldn’t come out of the county’s budget, though he didn’t say where the cash would come from. The announcement came last night since today marks the first day citizens can register to get on the ballot. One of her potential opponents includes a gay man who couldn’t get a marriage license from her. After last night’s victory by Danica Roam over the conservative bigot who wrote an anti-transgender bathroom bill, I sincerely hope David Ermold jumps into the race. It would be sweet justice if he won.
“I think I could win,” said David Ermold, an English professor at Pikeville University who was among the many who sued Davis in 2015. “I don’t think that she has learned anything from the experience at all. I really, truly think that she feels like she is right. I really don’t think she cares at all about what civil rights are.”
He’s right. And that’s why Davis should lose. Forget her beliefs. She’s incapable of doing her job. Her religious beliefs supersede her elected obligations, and the voters in Rowan County deserve someone who will follow the law without attempting to be a martyr for the Christian Right.
