Gay Man Who Couldn’t Get Marriage License from Kim Davis Will Run for Her Seat

After teasing us a month ago, David Ermold officially announced today that he’ll be running in 2018 for the position of Rowan County (Kentucky) Clerk.

Why is that significant? He’ll be running against Kim Davis, the clerk who denied gay couples their legal marriage licenses because Jesus told her not to do her job… and Ermold happens to be one of the gay men who sued Davis because he couldn’t get his marriage license.

It’s times like this I wish karma were real.

Ermold, an English professor and local gay rights leader, is one of four Democrats entering the race.

“I am running to restore the confidence of the people in our clerk’s office and because I believe that the leaders of our community should act with integrity and fairness, and they should put the needs of their constituents first,” said Ermold, 43, who teaches English at the University of Pikeville and directs Morehead Pride, a local gay rights organization. “My commitment to Rowan County is to restore professional leadership, fairness, and responsibility to the clerk’s office. I will build upon the successes of the past, and I will seek solutions for the challenges we may still face.”

He has his work cut out for him in a red state and a red county — Donald Trump received nearly 60% of the vote there last year — but this will be Davis’ first election since her controversy gained nationwide attention. That also means it’s the first time taxpayers can get revenge on Davis for having to pay nearly $225,000 to cover her legal fees.

Even besides the karmic justice, though, Davis has proven that she can’t do her job. Her religious beliefs supersede her obligations as an elected official, and the voters in Rowan County deserve someone who will follow the law without attempting to be a martyr for the Christian Right.
