If God Gives Her a Sign, Michele Bachmann Will Run for Al Franken’s Senate Seat

Michele Bachmann, the former Congresswoman and failed Republican presidential candidate, told televangelist Jim Bakker last week that she’s considering running for Al Franken‘s vacated Senate seat in Minnesota.

She’s just waiting for a sign from God.

On last Wednesday’s show, Bachmann said that she has “had people contact me and urge me to run for that Senate seat” and that she is asking God if doing so in His will for her.

“I trust in a big God,” Bachmann said, asserting that she “was supposed to run for president” in 2012 in order to make the the repeal of Obamacare the central issue of the Republican platform. “I feel like I was wildly successful … I didn’t win, but I moved the debate. So I didn’t shed a tear when I left the contest because I felt like, you know, I fulfilled the calling that God gave me.”

“So the question is am I being called to do this now?” she added. “I don’t know.”

That’s Christian politispeak for “I’m totally running, and when I announce it, I’ll say God told me to and that He’s on my side.” Bachmann, of course, is a fundamentalist Christian who thinks “every archeology find” confirms the truth of the Bible, Donald Trump is a “man of prayer” who “hasn’t taken a day off” since getting into office, 9/11 was God’s judgment on America, and that liberals are hastening the arrival of the Antichrist.

Bachmann running wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing.

If she ran and won the GOP primary, there’s a good chance she’d be crushed in a general election. Pitting a religious right-wing extremist against a decent Democrat barely worked in Alabama — even without the child molestation allegations, Roy Moore had plenty of conservative critics — and Bachmann would have a hard time winning over Minnesota moderates.

As it stands, Minnesota Lt. Governor Tina Smith will be sitting in Franken’s seat until a special election in November, when she’ll formally run to serve the final two years of his term. Smith, by all accounts, is a decent Democrat who will surely keep the votes of people who previously voted for Franken — and possibly pick up even more based on her performance over the next few months. 2018 also looks to be a year of reckoning for Republicans, all of whom will have to deal with voter backlash against Donald Trump.

All of that is to say: May God tell Bachmann to run, and may she fail miserably once again.
