GOP Lawmaker Yells “Abortion is Murder!” at Students Backing Birth Control Bill

A Republican State Senator from Idaho was recorded literally yelling at students who had scheduled a meeting with him to discuss a bill that would help make birth control more accessible for women. Despite the fact that the students weren’t there to discuss abortion, he cancelled the appointment and shouted at them that “Abortion is murder!”

Republican State Sen. Dan Foreman was scheduled to meet with a dozen University of Idaho students, who traveled almost 300 miles to speak with legislators. They were advocating for a bill that would allow women to get up to a 12-month supply of prescribed birth control and “promote better sex education on college campuses,” according to the Associated Press.

Foreman abruptly canceled the meeting Monday morning.

The group left a note and condoms in his office before moving onto other scheduled meetings with lawmakers from northern Idaho regions.

Later that day, the Republican from Moscow passed the students in a hallway and several people recorded him shouting, “Abortion is murder.”

“I’m a Roman Catholic and a conservative Republican. I think what you guys are doing stinks,” Foreman says on the video.

The students were not at the Capitol to talk about abortion, said Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho public affairs director Paul Dillon. They were present to encourage lawmakers to vote in favor of the birth control and sex education bill.

Got that? Promoting sex education and helping women get their birth control prescriptions “stinks!” (That’ll make quite a campaign ad for anyone running against Foreman in the future.)

Near the end of the video, you also hear Foreman yelling, with no sense of irony whatsoever, “You’re damn right it’s my choice.”

Another Republican politician apparently “waved a rosary” while talking about abstinence with the students, but Foreman was the only one who actually yelled at them. After the interaction, an unverified Twitter account reporting to be associated with Foreman sent even more offensive messages and encouraged the students to ask a Democratic colleague about “killing babies.”

As a result of the offensive tweets, a formal ethics complaint was filed against Foreman.

State Sen. Maryanne Jordan filed the complaint against Republican state Sen. Dan Foreman.

“It’s one thing to disagree with policy, it’s another thing to position something like that against another lawmaker,” Jordan said in response to the tweet Monday. “This type of behavior is beneath the Idaho Senate.”

This isn’t the first time Foreman has engaged in behavior that’s “beneath the Idaho Senate.” He was previously recorded yelling “Go straight to hell, you son of a bitch” at someone, and he was criticized for telling a constituent that global warming is “nonsense” and a scam for liberals to raise taxes.

If anything, the students had plenty of ammunition to use against Foreman if they wanted to shout back at him, but they were mature and controlled their emotions while advocating for their issues.

Foreman could stand to learn a lesson from them.
