Michigan Church’s Billboard Encourages Drivers to “Skip Church This Easter”

In a seemingly bizarre move, a Michigan church paid for this billboard to go up in Wayne County urging people to “skip church this Easter.”

The actual version (which I couldn’t get my hands on) includes the URL SkipEaster.com… and if anyone goes to the website, they’d be redirected to a page run by Ward Church. And guess what? They’re just kidding! They absolutely want you to go to church. April Fools! Hahahahahahahaha… said nobody.

“Of course, we want people to visit with us on Easter,” says Ward Senior Pastor Scott McKee. “Just as Jesus did some unexpected things after His resurrection, we thought something unexpected was appropriate. Easter being on April 1 gave us a way to do it.

Or Jesus disappeared from the tomb just like you should disappear from church.

This sort of billboard is to be expected when Easter falls on April Fools’ Day. (That last time that happened was in 1956 and it won’t happen again until 2029. So at least we’ll be spared the jokes for a while after this.)

But I do have my doubts as to how effective this campaign will be. After all, we’ve seen a number of billboards from American Atheists actually urging people to skip church on certain holidays.

Given the rapidly changing religious demographics in America, I wonder how many drivers will see this sign, assume it was put up by atheists, and never visit the website to learn the “punchline.”

Hey, it’s always nice when a church does our work for us!
