Creationist Cynthia Dunbar is on the Verge of Winning a Seat in Congress

From 2007 to 2011, the Texas State Board of Education was in the news for all the wrong reasons, and board member Cynthia Dunbar was a big reason why.

Dunbar, a graduate of Pat Robertson‘s Regent University School of Law, insisted that public education was a “subtly deceptive tool of perversion.” She even gave a prayer before a board meeting in which she said our nation’s government and laws should be Bible-based.

… I believe no one can read the history of our country without realizing that the Good Book and the spirit of the savior have from the beginning been our guiding geniuses.

Whether we look to the first charter of Virginia, or the charter of New England, or the charter of Massachusetts Bay, or the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, the same objective is present: a Christian land governed by Christian principles.

… I like to believe we are living today in the spirit of the Christian religion. I like also to believe that as long as we do so, no great harm can come to our country.

Speaking of harming the country, she also called for a rewrite of the history textbooks that eliminated mention of the slave trade and minimized the role of Thomas Jefferson, who supported church/state separation.

She was also, not surprisingly, one of the board members who fought the teaching of evolution.

Educated people didn’t miss her when she chose not to run for another term.

But now, following a move to Virginia and a new job teaching at Liberty University, Dunbar is running for U.S. Congress from that state’s 6th District, hoping to replace Republican Rep. Bob Goodlatte. She has a good chance at winning, too, because of new rules implemented by the state’s GOP.

In looking to help Dunbar, the district’s Republican committee opted for a convention instead of a primary. Moreover, they changed the rules to allow the winner to be declared not when a candidate receives a majority of the votes, but when they simply receive a plurality of the votes cast.

It’s looking more and more like Dunbar will be selected in today’s nominating convention before skating to victory in November due to the district’s heavily Republican tilt. It won’t be long before she has the opportunity to hurt education around the country instead of just in Texas.
