North Dakota GOP Reacts to Muslim Invocation: We Shouldn’t Be Forced to “Listen to a Prayer [We] Don’t Agree With”

When we talk about invocations at government meetings, we know the reality of the situation is that they are almost all Christian prayers… with an occasional non-Christian thrown in there to keep things legal.

But the North Dakota District 24 Republicans found reason to freak out when Dr. Nadim Koleilat, a local Muslim leader, was scheduled to deliver the House invocation this past Wednesday. Ash Wednesday. So not only was he supposed to deliver his prayer on a Christian holiday, he was a Muslim delivering what we all know is supposed to be a Christian prayer.

Why Scott Walker (and All Politicians) Should Be Asked About Evolution

Last week, Wisconsin Governor and likely presidential hopeful Scott Walker embarrassed himself in an interview when he responses to a question about whether or not he accepts evolution by saying, “I’m going to punt on that one as well… That’s a question a politician shouldn’t be involved in one way or the other.”

A researcher from Liberty University (yes, really) is doing research on how young people develop or let go of their religious beliefs. It’s legit research, not some trick to proselytize to you, and your help would be appreciated.

An African-American Atheist is Running for a California State Senate Seat as a Write-in Candidate

Last November, California State Senator Steve Knight was elected to the U.S. Congress, obviously requiring him to vacate his State Senate seat. But because he wasn’t up for re-election, that meant a special election had to be held in the Antelope Valley area to find his successor.

That special election, which takes place on March 17, currently has only one candidate in the race: Sharon Runner. She’s a Republican who, not coincidentally, was in the State Senate until Knight beat her in the 2008 elections. (Looks like she wants her seat back.)

The fact that only one candidate is in the race has prompted Steve Hill (below) — an African-American atheist known in our community for his stand-up comedy — to run as a write-in candidate:
