There Was Nothing Wrong with Richard Dawkins’ Tweet That “Islam Needs a Feminist Revolution”

I’ve disagreed with Richard Dawkins before on his insensitivity to women, feminism, and majority privilege. Some of it he’s apologized for, so I’d like to think we’re starting to be heard. I know all too well from environmental campaigns the importance of acknowledging our successes.

And thus, I part with my fellow Friendly Atheist contributor Lauren Nelson in her recent post, which struck out scathingly at Dawkins for the following single tweet:

There is nothing wrong with those words.  The question deserves answers, not attacks.

Richard Dawkins Fails Spectacularly on Feminism and Islam

It’s not unusual for renowned atheist Richard Dawkins to rub people of faith the wrong way. It’s not unheard of for him to get on the bad side of feminists. But it’s not every day that he pisses off the intersection of the two groups. But this week, with a series of tweets, that’s exactly what Dawkins did.

A chemist by the name of Dr. Carl Djerassi had found a way to synthesize the hormones they contained. While it would take another decade of testing before his work would reach its intended market, he had created a combination that gave birth to what we now know as The Pill.

Decades have passed since oral contraception first went mainstream. Since then, scientific advances have given us even more options in terms of hormonal contraception, from implants to rings to patches. There’s certainly been a fair amount of opposition along the way, particularly from the Religious Right, who feel such measures interfere with God’s plan.

Christian Writer Creates Guide to “Training Your Wife”

We know that one of the worst aspects of conservative Christian culture is how women are often treated as inferior to men. (Or, to paraphrase pastors, they’re equal; they just have “different roles.”)

A website called the Trailer Club (“We esteem women & value them”) just offered up a perfect example of this type of sexism. I thought it was a parody site when I first saw it, but now I’m not so sure.

They posted a piece that’s literally called “The Gentlemen’s Guide To Training Your Wife“:

Conservative Christian Blogger: Accepting Caitlyn Jenner for Who She Is Demeans Women

Conservative Christian blogger Matt Walsh (who you may remember for his recent, peculiar defense of the Duggars) is deeply offended — for women — when people refer to Caitlyn Jenner by her name. (That is, as a woman.)

In fact, Walsh is so deeply insulted on behalf of women that he wrote a piece on The Blaze to explain, in some really hateful terms, just how insulted he was. And, naturally, he found time to knock feminism in the process (which, presumably, he’s also doing for women).
