Humanist Service Corps Looking for People to Join Them on a Secular Mission Trip in Africa

Nearly a year ago, I announced the formation of the Pathfinders Project, a “yearlong international service trip with clean water, education, sustainability, and advocacy projects in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.” Director Conor Robinson was looking for four people to join him on the secular mission trip.

He found his team and they accomplished some incredible things in Uganda, Cambodia, Ghana, Haiti, Ecuador, Colombia, and Guatemala.

Now, Conor (below, center) wants to do it again. He’s looking for more people to join him in the Humanist Service Corps:

Generous Atheists Are About to Make a Major Donation to a Single Incredible Charity

When we launched Foundation Beyond Belief in 2010, the plan was to encourage atheists to give to a bunch of amazing charities — 10 of them each quarter, to be precise — and help make giving to others a habit for secular people (who usually have no formal way to do that).

In 2012, we decided to cut the number of beneficiaries from 10 to 5 in order to give larger donations to each organization. That, coupled with a rising donor base, took us from giving about $1,200 to each group at our launch… to about $12,000 per group today.

It’s just incredible what FBB’s members have accomplished.

Now, we want to take it to the next level. (I’m so freakin’ excited about this.)

Humanist Groups Band Together to Provide Legal Assistance to Refugee Children

Over the past several months, tens of thousands of children from Central America countries have crossed the border into the U.S. in order to escape instability, poverty, and even sexual violence. Many of them are coming alone. While government organizations like FEMA are providing them basic necessities, most of these children have no legal representation during mandatory immigration hearings.

Many large religious organizations are already supporting various efforts to help these children. Now, Foundation Beyond Belief and the American Humanist Association are giving atheists a chance to do the same. They know God isn’t going to help these children, but we can.
