Hawaii Nixes Sex Ed Program After Politician Complains It Will “Normalize” Homosexuality

Sex education in Hawaii middle schools will only be available on an opt-in basis, thanks to a scathing campaign by one of the state’s most notoriously homophobic politicians.

For months now, Rep. Bob McDermott (below) has railed against any and all pro-LGBT measures in his state. He filed a lawsuit to try to halt marriage equality in Hawaii — and failed — and whined about the Southern Poverty Law Center lending a “Teaching Tolerance” curriculum about diversity and acceptance to Hawaii schools.

Because my review of that law convinces me that plaintiffs are entitled to the same treatment as any heterosexual couple, I conclude that the Wisconsin laws banning marriage between same-sex couples are unconstitutional.

It was another wonderfully-written rebuke to the typical arguments made by the Christian Right, much in the same vein as Judge John E. Jones III did in Pennsylvania.

And, also like Jones, Crabb (below) deserves recognition for her important decisions regarding church/state separation.

You’ll Want to Support This Documentary About a Former Westboro Baptist Church Member

Nate Phelps is one of the children of Fred Phelps, the infamous founder of Westboro Baptist Church who died earlier this year. Unlike his father with his “God Hates Fags” signs, Phelps is now a strong supporter of LGBT rights. After his father’s death, he beautifully wrote, “I will mourn his passing, not for the man he was, but for the man he could have been.”

Brad Johnson, Jason Badgett, and Terrie Johnson are filmmakers who want to share Nate’s story with the world — and if the trailer for their upcoming documentary is any indication, the full movie will be incredible.
