Disney’s Cinderella Is a Fundamentalist’s Wet Dream

When my daughters, 10 and 12, went to Florida with me recently, we flew into Orlando. To my great relief, neither of them expressed any interest in going to Disney World; we spent a great day at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center instead.

I’ve always loathed Disney animated movies, at least the saccharine, sexist, trademark fare that the studio pumped out for many decades, until Pixar more or less dragged the ossified giant into the 21st century.

I’ll confess that one extra (and related) reason for my dislike is that Christian fundamentalists tend to adore Disney.

The reason I bring it all up is this brand new “honest trailer,” in which a surprisingly authentic-sounding voice-over explains exactly what’s going on between the lines of the wretched original script for Cinderella.

Simpsons Co-Creator Sam Simon Did Not Spend His Fortune on Atheist Billboards

A few days ago, Sam Simon, one of the creators of The Simpsons, died from colorectal cancer.

Simon had made hundreds of millions of dollars from his involvement with the show and he was a philanthropist in every sense of the word, giving away a large chunk of that money to causes that meant a lot to him. Causes like animal rights.

He was also an atheist and he gave some money to support the 2012 Reason Rally and to American Atheists for some of their billboard campaigns, including this one:

How much money do you think that all amounts to? A few thousand dollars? Perhaps tens of thousands of dollars, if he was feeling extra-generous?

Sam Simon, Co-Creator of The Simpsons and Atheist Philanthropist, Dies at 59

Sam Simon, one of the creators of The Simpsons died yesterday from colorectal cancer at the age of 59.

Simon knew his disease would kill him at a young age so he vowed a long time ago to give away most of the hundreds of millions of dollars he had made, especially to causes supporting animal rights.

A profile of him in Vanity Fair last year explained his non-religious outlook on life:
