Democrat Ed Markey, Massachusetts’ Next Senator, Earned an ‘A’ Grade from the Secular Coalition for America

Earlier tonight, Ed Markey (D) beat Gabriel Gomez (R) in a race to take over John Kerry‘s Senate seat in Massachusetts.

Markey, who’s been a Representative for the state since 1976, earned a grade of C on the Secular Coalition for America’s congressional scorecard in 2011.

More recently, however, when the SCA put out a scorecard just for this special Senate election (PDF), they gave him (and his opponent) an A:

The Secular Coalition for America Met with White House Representatives… Will It Help?

Earlier today, the Secular Coalition for America announced that they had met with representatives from the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships. It marked the first time since February of 2010 that an official, publicized meeting like this took place:

An Atheist Member of the Arizona House of Representatives Delivered a Godless Invocation Today

Juan Mendez, a 28-year-old Democratic State Representative from Tempe, Arizona, got elected this past November. Somehow, this bit of information on his Facebook page slipped under our community’s collective radar:

Say what now?!

But if his atheism wasn’t publicly known before, it is now. Earlier today, Mendez did something we’ve rarely seen from any elected official in any state: He delivered an invocation before the House began its afternoon session in which he honored his Secular Humanism:

Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) Will Speak at Secular Coalition for America’s Lobby Day and Secular Summit Event

As I’ve mentioned before, the Secular Coalition for America is sponsoring a Lobby Day and Secular Summit next week. It’s a packed event full of educational meetings, panels about issues non-theists care about, and addresses by government officials.

The SCA announced weeks ago that Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) would be a Keynote Speaker on the morning of Wednesday, April 25th. And they’ve just announced that their second keynote speaker (giving a talk that same afternoon) will be Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA):
