Ken Ham Is Furious That My Book Will Be Handed Out to High School Students in Kentucky

Uh-oh. Either Creationist Ken Ham reads my site regularly, or his Google Alerts found me. Either way, he’s not happy that the Tri-State Freethinkers are giving away copies of my book The Young Atheist’s Survival Guide on the last day of classes in the Boone County school system in Kentucky.

Since Ham hasn’t read my book — it’s not anti-Christian at all and simply explains to all audiences how they can help young atheists — he has to resort to quoting excerpts from my blog that criticize his beliefs (without linking to them because FSM-forbid his readers make up their own minds about what I write). Still, thanks, Ken, for giving my critiques a new audience!

Ask Richard: A Follow-Up Letter from a Teenage Atheist Four Years Later

Dear Richard,

I wrote to you back in 2009 when I was in the 8th grade and you really helped me and I wanted to thank you for that. I just recently rediscovered your blog and I figured I would write to you again. I’m now a senior in high school and in the time since the 8th grade I’ve completely reassessed my faith. For a little while I kept trying to be Christian, and for about a year I was. I feel like that was good for me though. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think it’s a very unwise thing to completely disown one’s faith in middle school. I have, however, come to the conclusion that I am an atheist, and I honestly do not see that changing. I’m just worried about any fallout caused by this, and I don’t quite know how to approach certain situations that I face on a near daily basis. I’m trying to get some answers to questions preemptively in hopes that when I’m faced with these situations (either once again or someday in the future) I will know the best way to handle them.

Ask Richard: Young Atheist’s Parents Face Bigotry and Harrassment in Small Religious Town

Note: Letter writers’ names are changed to protect their privacy.
Dear Richard,

My name is Kaitlyn. I’m 15 years old and have been an atheist since I was 10. I’m fortunate enough to have parents that are very open minded and irreligious.

I happen to live in a small, extremely religious town. (There are 19 Christian churches here, and we just reached a population of 2,000 last spring) I’ve become somewhat notorious for my atheism because I’m really open about it. Most people have gotten used to me, I guess. I’m not targeted much anymore.

However, this is not so for my family. [Click headline for more...] [Read more...]

What Obstacles Do Young Atheists Face?

I’m working on a project with a local professor called The Atheist Voice in which I tackle some burning question people often ask atheists.

The video below answers the question: What Obstacles Do Young Atheists Face?

We’d love to hear your thoughts on the project — more videos will be posted soon — and we’d also appreciate your suggestions as to which questions we ought to tackle next! [Read more...]

Video of My Talk Introducing The Young Atheist’s Survival Guide

Last June, I gave a talk at the FreeOK Conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma about The Young Atheist’s Survival Guide (before the book had a title).

It’s an expanded version of some of my similar talks online and Seth Andrews and his team did a great job of putting the video together. Hope you like it! [Read more...]
