Tom Brady’s Deflated Balls

By now, you've probably heard that the New England Patriots are headed to yet another Super Bowl. If you feel as I do about that, pause now to stifle your vomit or go ahead and let it spew. Ok sure, they've won a lot of Super Bowls lately and that's cause for respect and commendation, right? The New York Yankees of football, right? Maybe, but not so fast. This week, as you've probably also heard, the NFL discovered that eleven out of twelve balls the Patriots used during their lopsided 45-7 … [Read more...]

“King of the Nerds” Season 2 Flies Into Action

From Geek Goes Rogue TV Editor Zach W. Lorton, as told to by the... well, crap, there's absolutely nothing within my line of sight that one could call nerdy..."Sylvanas is the Banshee Queen of the Forsaken."  Betcha didn't know that, now, did you?Thursday night saw the much-anticipated return of the TBS reality competition series King of the Nerds.  I absolutely loved the first season, and have been waiting on 17-pin connectors and needles for last night's premiere.  The producers we … [Read more...]

Cross-Country Romances Do Sometimes Work

“How can you not be romantic about baseball?” Truer words were never spoken by Oakland Athletics’ GM Billy Beane...or at least, by Brad Pitt playing Billy Beane in 2011’s Moneyball. Here we sit, two weeks away from the end of another glorious baseball regular season, and for the second straight year, my dear Phillies will enjoy the postseason from the same vantage point that I will...the living room couch. After years of bloated contracts, huge trades that decimated the farm system, and of cour … [Read more...]

Curses, Scapegoats, and the End of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ 20 Years of Futility

A few nights ago, the Pittsburgh Pirates won their 81st game of the 2013 MLB regular season, ensuring that the team will not finish the year with more losses than wins for the first time since 1992. That was twenty-one years ago, for those of you non-math types. Before we had the freaking Internet (as we know it today, at least). Those born during the last Pirates winning season are now legally allowed to drink. And between these two winning seasons FOUR people have held the office of President … [Read more...]

All Braun and No Brains?

The baseball world is still digesting the stiffest (and most badass) performance-enhancing drug penalty handed out in the history of Major League Baseball. In case you missed it, Ryan Braun, of the Milwaukee Brewers has been suspended for the remainder of the 2013 season due to strong evidence that he received PEDs from Biogenesis of America, a now-defunct anti-aging clinic in South Florida. Of the sixty-seven major league players who have tested positive for PEDs since testing began in 2004, … [Read more...]

Comic Books, Fourteen Year Old Boys and Pop Cultural Snobbery

I'm almost finished with Michael Chabon's fantastic novel, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. If you aren't familiar with this Pulitzer Prize winning novel, the book follows the tale of two Jewish boys-on-the-cusp of manhood who create comic books during the "Golden Age of Comics" (before World War II and just after). In the later part of the novel, Sammy Clay, the writer of the duo, has to appear before Congress during the 1950's Great Comic Book Scare.   Chabon shows in his m … [Read more...]
