TABC 2015 Wrap Up: A Story about Mr. Potato Head

Hey Everyone,I could bore you all with my navel gazing self important reflections on my time at Teen Author Boot Camp 2015. I could brag about my class or meeting Brandon Sanderson and Jessica Day George? Really, are you all that interested in that? Do Brandon and Jessica need the hype (amazingly nice people though they are, staying two hours after the event to make sure everyone's book got signed). I thought not. Instead, I'm going to give you all an example of what it's all ab … [Read more...]

If Your God Doesn’t have a Sense of Humor, He’s Not Worth Serving.

Like the rest of the world, I’m horrified at the Charlie Hebdo shootings in France. Gunmen killed twelve people because the humor magazine posted supposedly offensive cartoons of Mohammed.  People have reacted to the horrific events with outrage and holding up pens to show their solidarity with those slain on the alter of free speech. This is all very good. Certainly, those who write or create art shouldn’t be cowed by the barrel of a gun. Terror can never dictate what we c … [Read more...]

2015….The Year I’ll Become a Writer Again And Not Chase Hollywood

I’m not sorry to see 2014 go. It’s been like riding a roller coaster ride conceived by Quentin Tarantino with enough violent twists to make anyone’s neck snap.A few of the turns include:I got a job as a book editor and moved to Notre Dame, Indiana. I love my job. I get to produce great books and help fellow authors hone their words. Is there a better job for a writer? I don’t think so. The whole thing about writers not being good editors is a crock of poo. Yes, writers shouldn’t edit thei … [Read more...]

Dick Cheney is the White Witch of Narnia (and so is any Christian who agrees with him on torture)

White Witch of Narnia

Every other weekend, I drive from South Bend to St. Louis to be with the Hooligans (my kids). It’s a long drive and I listen to audiobooks to pass the time. A friend let me borrow her Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis and this past weekend I listened to The Magician's Nephew. The sixth book in Lewis' series (or the first, depending on which numbering system you prefer) is Narnia’s creation story. The tale shows us how Aslan (Lewis' stand in for Jes … [Read more...]

Using the Shepherd’s Crook: Pope Francis Schools Evangelicals, the Media, and the Entire Catholic Church in One Sermon

APTOPIX Italy Pope Epiphany

As a person going through a divorce, I took a deep, personal interest in the Synod on the Family. I was thrilled that my beloved church wanted to take a pastoral interest in the needs of its sheep.  I wanted to see good, sound and practical steps from the assembled church leaders on how to navigate the troubled waters of modern family life. Sadly, the whole thing almost got derailed by the so-called “mid-synod” report. Conservatives screamed bloody murder at some of the released remarks (I’ve ye … [Read more...]

Horror Writer Goes in Seach of Michigan Dogman…Will Said Author Return Alive?

In search of Dogman

Sometimes, writers hit a wall. It happens to the best of us. I won’t call it “writer’s block”. This frightening tale is an urban legend used to scare young  and developing storytellers. Anyone with a work ethic can find a way to put words on a computer screen. Maybe what a person writes is bad, but it can always be rewritten. There's no such thing as not being able to write at all. However, at some point, a writer comes to a point where the Well of Imagination from The Mystical Realm of Creati … [Read more...]

Robin Williams, the Canary Prophet

The news of Robin Williams’ apparent suicide yesterday hit the Internet with blinding speed. People are pouring out their grief and utter disbelief. How could someone who brought so much joy and beauty end their life? How could he do something so contrary to what he brought to others? While no one will say it outright, some believe that anyone who commits suicide is a failure. They think that people who take their own life fail to see happiness of life and cannot face their "own … [Read more...]
