God’s Not Dead…But Films Like This Should Be (Part 2)

Staring contest

It's official. God's Not Dead, released by Pure Flix Entertainment, has been nothing short of a financial smash success, raking in over $8 million in its first three days. Opening in just 780 theaters nation-wide, the film made close to $3 million on its Friday release date alone, en route to cementing itself as the number three movie of the weekend. I guess this is the part where I admit to being way off base in part one of my review, in which I offered some harsh reactions and assessments … [Read more...]

God’s Not Dead…But Films Like This Should Be (Part 1)

Back when I was in college at the dawn of the 21st century, Christian films were just starting to explode onto the scene. Sure, religious-themed films have always been around to some extent, but it's been just under twenty years since the era of the "Hey, we're just as cool as, seriously, we are!" types of Christian films began hitting the market. You know, the kind of films that cause churches and ministry groups to gush in anticipation of a release date while acting like … [Read more...]

JoJo’s Hollywood Stories: The Giver Set Exclusive!!!

A brilliant sun glared off the white snow as we pulled into the film camp of the movie, The Giver. Production trailers, catering trucks and equipment crammed the lot. Clark and I unloaded the stunt props he’d built and a man radioed up the ski slope to let the stunt coordinator know we’d arrived. We waited in the freezing cold our breath making little clouds until the snowmobile picked us up and carried us up the mountain. Clark and Frank discussed modifications to the stunt … [Read more...]

Announcing the Four Finalists for the 3 Gates Film Contest

To new readers of Geek Goes Rogue, I am the author of the 3 Gates of the Dead series (available everywhere books are sold). The debut novel is doing very well, exploding into the top ten paranormal reads and the top 20 in horror on Amazon. My publisher, Premier Publishing, ran a contest for aspiring filmmakers based on 3 Gates of the Dead. Participants chose to either film a trailer or a scene from the novel and entered the competition for free. Four finalists have been chosen … [Read more...]

“American Hustle” – A Scorsese Homage Loved by a Scorsese Hater

From Geek Goes Rogue TV Editor Zach W. Lorton, as told to by the Darth Tater Mr. Potato Head on his desk, whose back has been turned to him for weeks now... I don't like Martin Scorsese films. *ducks* As a lover of American cinema, those words are considered blasphemy to many, but I can't help it.  It's just how I feel.  I've seen only a few Scorsese films, but enough to know that there's something about the director's style that just doesn't connect with me.  That's why whenever a … [Read more...]

Announcing….COTTONWOOD Indiegogo Campaign!

Hey Rogueites, Through a variety of cool circumstances, I've been attached as associate producer to a cool ground breaking indie project, Cottonwood. This project is a racial drama set in 1930's dust bowl Texas and has some pretty major talent attached. Who? Try Academy Award Winner Louis Gosett Jr, Anthony Michael Hall, Alison Eastwood, Ethan Suplee, and Joe Perry (yes, THAT Joe Perry, you know, the kick ass guitar player from Aerosmith). We're starting an Indiegogo campaign … [Read more...]

Joel Hodgson to host MST3K Turkey Day Marathon on November 28th

From Geek Goes Rogue TV Editor Zach W. Lorton, as told to by the seemingly blank November calendar taped to his desk... When I was in high school, my friends Eric and Jamie introduced me to a little 2-hour program on Comedy Central called Mystery Science Theater 3000.  I hadn't fully embraced geek culture yet, so I was a little skeptical that a show 2 hours in length could capture my attention as a young man.  Oh, how ignorant I was. In college, I made some very good friends who also … [Read more...]

Grace Unplugged: A fine film for Evangelical families…and that’s the problem

(Possible Spoilers Ahead) Allow me to say something at the beginning of this review, in case people think I'm trying to be overly negative.  Grace Unplugged is probably one of the best "Christian" films I've seen. The acting is great, the script is decent, and the movie well made. You can take your evangelical family and you will get a safe, non-offensive movie going experience. And that's the problem. Grace Unplugged follows the story of eighteen-year-old Grace Trey (AJ Michalka) who … [Read more...]
