HWA Scary Writers: Tom Calen

Tom Calen

(As everyone knows, I just became a fully active (and proud) member of the Horror Writer's Association. So, I thought it would be a cool way to celebrate Halloween by interviewing some writer's from the HWA about the genre. Tom Calen has some great insights below...) What made you want to write horror?By the fourth or fifth grade, I had made my way through Poe and was on to Shelley and Stoker. About a year after that, I “borrowed” my sister’s copy of SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. I was blown away … [Read more...]

Simpsons Executive Producer Al Jean: “Religion Will Be A Part of Character’s Death”.

1280x1024_Family

As I watch TV and movies, I'm often frustrated at how they treat the subject of religion. Pop Culture either ignores it (wouldn't want to offend anyone) or degrades it as much as possible (just about every episode of Family Guy). Very few shows or movies take religion at face value and address it in all of it's glory and absurdity. This is why the Simpsons are still one of my all time favorite TV shows. As much as church groups protested the show back in the early 90's, the fact remains that t … [Read more...]

Revisiting Star Trek: VOYAGER

320x240

May 23, 1994 – a cheer erupted from a house packed with nerdy (and not-so-nerdy) high schoolers as the Riker-commanded three-nacelled Enterprise unapologetically demolished a Klingon bird of prey. Star Trek: The Next Generation was about to end. What was next? … [Read more...]

Salt Lake City Comic Con: Interview with Neal Adams: “Comics can Entertain and Make People think on a Deeper Level”

green_lantern-076

(Salt Lake City Comic Con has been a mind blowing experience. I have so much to write about and I'll try to get to all of it in the next week. I'd planned to give a run down of the past two days in tonight's post. My plans got changed in a hurry. Why? Well, on Thursday, I walked the floor of the vendor hall before the crowds started to pour into the arena. As I toured the aisles, I stopped short when I saw a huge table with one of my all time heroes, comic legend Neal Adams, signing prints of … [Read more...]

The Remaining: Casey La Scala

The Reamaing

(Today, The Remaining comes out in theaters everywhere. I had a chance to screen the movie. I have to say, it's the best "faith based" movie I've seen. Parts of the movie scared me and provided some great thrills.Casey La Scala is a Hollywood rebel who makes his own way. He's produced amazing cult films like Donnie Darko (one of my favorites) and mainstream films like What a Girl Wants. The Remaining, however, is his directorial and writing debut)Many in the Christian world likes to … [Read more...]

My First Comic Con: How We Will Cover it

So, I'm about three days away from my first Comic Con ever. Yes, that's right, I've never been to a comic con. I know this is really hard for most people to comprehend, especially the people who follow this site on a regular basis. Here's the thing, I'm only partially a geek. I like playing video games, but I'm not a gamer. I love comic books, but I'm not going to be participating in cosplay. I love Sci-FI/Fantasy, but I won't be getting into long, involved discussions about the bathroom … [Read more...]

The Remaining: Interview with Alexa Vega

Alexa Vega head shot

(As regular readers of The Rogue know, we have an interest (some say warped) in the deluge of so-called Christian movies hitting the market. Most of them are bad, few are good and some just recycle the same old evangelical crap. However, when The Remaining came across my email, I couldn't pass it up. How does a post rapture/sort of found footage/monster movie/zombie thriller grab you?Yeah, I thought so.We had two phone interviews with Alexa Vega and the director Casey La Scala to get t … [Read more...]
