St. Anthony syndrome

Great and widely-applicable story from Dawn Eden at National Review Online, from a discussion of Planned Parenthood and the left’s absolute hatred of abstinence education:

Some 1,700 years ago, a hermit living in the Egyptian desert predicted “a time is coming when people will go mad.”“And when they see someone who is not mad,” continued the man known today as St. Anthony the Great, “they will attack him, saying, ‘You are mad, you are not like us.’”

What are some examples of this syndrome?

Dr Dobson´s various pronouncements as to what “Normal” looks like, further claiming his opinions all to be scriptural.

    Example:

“Boys naturally carry books at their side (protective posture), girls naturally carry books hugged to their chest (nurturing posture).”

So what about boys and girls who DON´T do this? What would THAT mean? What unintended and false message would this send to boys and girls who are not “normal” per Dobson? This is not innocent or neutral stuff when spoken by an “expert authority” who is assumed to have done his objective research….

Perhaps it means nothing at all in either case?

Could it be that right and left are BOTH crazy in the SAME way for the same reasons assuming a norm that is anything but? But one (the right) being more dangerous because that one claims Biblical Authority?

Protective posture!? After a jackass in my junior high knocked the books out of my hand and sent them skidding down the hall, I found the best “protective posture” was to carry them in a backpack.

    Slightly off topic–
I was in San Antonio last year and asked many people, including the offical tourist office, “Why is the city named San Antonio?” No one knew who San Antonio was, although there is a statue of him on the Riverwalk. The Spanish settlers arrived on the feast day of St Anthony of Padua, hence it’s name. And no, this is not St Anthony the Great.

Thought of another one: When I was growing up, my cousins and some of my classmates would chastise me for getting good grades. I see some of that going on in some classrooms today.

How about parents or even other school officials giving good teachers a hard time for trying to fail a student who has not earned a passing grade.

A mother who does not make an income. My mother and all of her contemporaries absolutely did not work outside the home. Now when a female does not earn an income, she is looked upon as lazy, a moocher, stupid, a curious speciman–MAD.

Anyone who believes God’s original 10 Commandments is an Archaic Madman. Everyone knows the updated version:

    1. You shall have no other gods before me; but a large, flat-screen obelisk may be bowed down to and worshipped 12 hours/day.
    2. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, unless you are a right-wing talk radio host.
    3. Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy, unless your kid has a soccer game.
    4. Honor your father and your stepmother, and visit your step-dad and mother and your other mother on week-ends.
    5. You shall not murder, unless the victim lives in a womb.
    6. You shall not commit adultery or fornicate, UNLESS you use protection. (Lusting after a panty-clad female on afore-mentioned big screen obelisk is OK.)
    7. You shall not steal, but charging $185 for a 5-minute doctor visit is OK because “the government” will pay for it.
    8. Thou shalt not lie, but smoking is Worse.
9 & 10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s belongings. Just buy what he has, and put it on your credit card.

St. Anthony’s syndrome definitely applies to most of the traditional, sweet tea drinking, legalistic, KJV loving, suit and tie, southern gospel is the only music God loves Christians who live here in the mountains of NC.

Please help me Lord. They demand I be like them and I think they are nuts.

Excellent post Booklover. And this version of the 5th Commandment particularly struck me. I am often dismayed that folks see me as “closed minded” and probably a little mad that I am pro life.
