China vetoes the President’s worship plans

President Bush had planned to worship at an unregistered house church when he visits China for the Olympics. But the still-communist Chinese government has put the kibosh on those plans. For good measure, officials have sent pastors and other potential dissidents out of the city while President Bush is in Beijing, lest he meet with them and make a statement critical of the regime. Wait a minute! I thought that China was a happy, peace loving, smog free, modernizing country that was seeking to be part of the international community. I feel lied to. I like the line “still-communist”. People seem to think that because China has had this PR campaign for the past year and a half trying paint themselves as freedom loving, that it means they’ve dropped the dictatorial tactics of the past. This just shows that the Chinese gov’t is still the Chinese gov’t.

Somebody in the White House isn’t thinking; it is entirely possible that by looking for an unregistered house church in which to worship, our President just located a bunch of them for authorities to shut down.

And it’s also possible, on the brighter side, that the fact that such churches could be located shows that the authorities aren’t that worried. Maybe there is more liberty there than we think. Certainly some of the Chinese guys I work with think so.

My law firm has an office in Shanghi and as a result we currently have a young Chinese lawyer at our office in Milwaukee. I had lunch with her this week and was amazed at how little information she knew about current events happening in China. The media there is still dominated by the State; still highly censored. Other than the mere fact that they occurred, she did not know anything about the recent earthquakes. She had no idea that the little Tibetan uprising occurred.
