Union sees Boy Scout volunteerism as scab labor

Union troubled by Eagle Scout project in Allentown:

In pursuit of an Eagle Scout badge, Kevin Anderson, 17, has toiled for more than 200 hours hours over several weeks to clear a walking path in an east Allentown park.

Little did the do-gooder know that his altruistic act would put him in the cross hairs of the city's largest municipal union.

Nick Balzano, president of the local Service Employees International Union, told Allentown City Council Tuesday that the union is considering filing a grievance against the city for allowing Anderson to clear a 1,000-foot walking and biking path at Kimmets Lock Park.

"We'll be looking into the Cub Scout or Boy Scout who did the trails," Balzano told the council.

The fact that they are upset about volunteerism is the part that gets me. This attitude that union labor has, that they are entitled to the work is just disgusting.

Maybe someday a Boy Scout will be able to do us a real service and find a way to rid us of unions.

Maybe getting a union grievance should count as a merit badge in Scouting.

Sadly, unions, which originally fought abuses of workers by corrupt employers, have now deteriorated to where they themselves abuse workers and contribute to organized corruption in America.

I guess this means there won’t be any CCC or WPA type of help for the unemployed during this current recession/depression.

SEIU is the only union left with enough chutzpah to throw its weight around like this. Someday, however, we’ll all be members.

In my opinion, governments of the people — whether federal, state or local — have no business entering into contracts with labor unions. Conflict of interests, etc.

The next paragraph in the article you quoted is even more telling (and chilling):

“Balzano said Saturday he isn’t targeting Boy Scouts. But given the city’s decision in July to lay off 39 SEIU members, Balzano said ‘there’s to be no volunteers.’ No one except union members may pick up a hoe or shovel, plant a flower or clear a walking path.”

Can’t you just see the two thugs standing on either side of him, lead pipes in hand, as he utters those words?

Remind me again why we have government unions? I thought the purpose of unions was to ensure that laborers were not exploited by greedy, evil capitalists.

This calls to mind the Glenn Beck commercial for “Union Gum.”

Come to think of it, what is the SEIU’s stance on volunteerism when it comes to “Americorps?”

I have no problem with anyone volunteering but if it ends up being used to reduce a working mans hours or almost eliminate a position then I have a problem. Both I have seen happen and no union was involved .

    Reg:

Nothing in the story indicates that anyone’s job or hours were threatened by an Eagle Scout’s volunteer efforts on behalf of his hometown. This was a union power play and statement, plain and simple.

However, I don’t understand your statement, particularly in light of your comments on another thread that you are conservative, and desire a smaller, more efficient government. Are you saying that a job is an entitlement? If someone is willing to volunteer to do your job, then why should the taxpayers be gouged to pay you to do the same thing? How does that kind of mentality support the notion of smaller, more efficient government?
