Apple vs. Porn

Steve Jobs, the mind behind Apple computing, is making a stand against pornography, even though that happens to be one of the online world’s biggest business!  Comments from Pete at Grace-City:

Jobs has argued that he wants his portable computer devices to not sell or stock pornography.

When a critic emailed him to say that this infringed his freedoms, Jobs emailed back and told him to buy a different type of computer.

Steve Jobs is a fan of Bob Dylan. So one customer emailed him to ask how Dylan would feel about Jobs’ restrictions of customers’ freedoms.

The CEO of Apple replied to say that he values:

“Freedom from programs that steal your private data. Freedom from programs that trash your battery. Freedom from porn. Yep, freedom. The times they are a changin’ and some traditional PC folks feel their world is slipping away. It is.”

The interlocuter replied:

“I don’t want ‘freedom from porn.’ Porn is just fine! And I think my wife would agree.”

In the most revealing line, Steve Jobs dismissed the critic thus:

“You might care more about porn when you have kids.”

Pause for a moment and consider what the above emails represent.

The CEO of one of the wealthiest, most successful international companies, responds to the email of a customer. Business prospers on the mantra “The customer is always right.” Business wants the customers’ money.

But in this case, over the moral issue of pornography, Jobs is happy to tell customers to buy a different product. He argues that children and innocence ought to be preserved – and that trumps the dollar.

Google (with their motto “Don’t be evil”) rake in billions through pornography. Ranks of employees spend their time categorising and arranging advertising for pornography. (I know, I spent some time discussing the difficulties posed to a Christian who worked in their UK HQ) Pornography is huge business, yet here is the CEO of Apple telling the pornography businesses to take their dollars elsewhere.

Now Steve Jobs cannot actually stop pornography being accessed on the devices he sells – indeed you can jailbreak a device and run any pirated software on it. Neither can he necessarily set the ethical bar as high as a Christian may want it – but what he is doing is significant and commendable. He is taking responsibility for doing what he can. He is trying to not profit from pornography. Those deeds are important for the sake of his own soul. Matthew 18:7 comes to mind: “Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Such things must come, but woe to the man through whom they come!”

For the souls of other people, his public statements are valuable in that they permit consumers to identify with and commend his resistance to pornography. Our generation is saturated in pornography; a public statement from Steve Jobs resisting that, encourages others to believe that the secular-liberal-capitalist agenda is not the only show in town. Jobs’ comments are important for the manner in which they shape public cultural discourse.

Perhaps Job’s battle with cancer sharpened his focus as to how he wants to be remembered. He is not much of a reactive character. He seems to be more vision and spark than manipulative. It would be more effective coming from a more manipulative sort.

“For the souls of other people, his public statements are valuable in that they permit consumers to identify with and commend his resistance to pornography.”

screeeeetch. thunk. (sound of Lutheran brakes being applied):

This is about the bodily needs of other people. “flesh/body” in romans 8 is not about porn and sex. It is about earthly righteousness.

Steve Jobs identified that porn is harmful and for very practical reasons that it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out.

People can literally go to hell thinking that the fact that they don´t indulge in porn will give them a life. Works righteousness results in this.

Porn avoidance can also equal death of body and soul.

Cyber sex is a waste of time money and energy.

It is the opposite of god pleasing earthly righteousness:

    1) It causes harm
    2) It is an activity that does nothing to benefit anyone else (as opposed to live sex! ;).

No religion or god or christianity is needed to figure this out. At least that is what the Lutheran Confessions assert to be true…..

But, good Reverend, we are morally superior :-) On a more serious note, Jobs represents what we have all been doing all along – running our business according to our morals. It is a free market. And most of us have long valued money first. Jobs is saying that there are things more important than overall market share. I would only add that this is made more possible by the fact that Mac produces some very, very high quality products.

Steve Jobs is a totalitarian ***-hole with tyrannical business practices. That is why he refuses to cooperate with Adobe Flash, and that is why he maintains an iron grip on his products even after they are purchased by the consumer, making sure the “sandbox” is closed to anyone who would want to innovate. In short, latter-day Apple is the archetype of “evil corporation” (much like the recent Google).

Apple’s marketing, meanwhile, caters to narcissism and, in fact, produces products these days that are no better than PC products (they all use Intel hardware these days).

Here’s a somewhat humorous take on Apple and Steve Jobs generally that essentially reflects my thoughts on Apple (slightly NSFW language at points): http://www.cracked.com/article_18377_5-reasons-you-should-be-scared-apple_p1.html

As for the “ban” on pornography, I guarantee you that there is a business reason, and I further warrant that it is temporary:

This wasn’t about Jobs’s “morals” (if he has any).

Ptl (@17), seriously? How about the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5): “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.”

ptl@19: I’m going to give your comment more credit and credence than it deserves by agreeing that a depiction of sex is not necessarily “sinful” or designed to incite lust, etc., by virtue of containing nudity or sexual content. In fact, modern Christians seem all too willing to foreclose all depictions of sex, even rightly understood (while indulging all sorts of violence on screen).

BUT, by its very definition, pornography is a depiction of sex specifically intended to excite feelings of lust and desire, so if you’re just watching pornography “for its own sake” (whatever that means) or for its “artistic value”, two things:

    a) You’re doing it wrong.

    b) You need to reevaluate your artistic standards.

A pornographic work that fails to induce lust isn’t very good pornography.

And I think it’s entirely possible for me and several attractive women to all lounge around naked, giving each other massages, without a single lustful thought to enter my head. Because hey, I have knots in my back from slouching.

thanks for the definition…..but am really wondering why fws is picking on porn? why not judge the rest of our culture who’s clothing, conversation, advertising, etc. etc. is designed to excite feelings of lust? or perhaps the thongs, bikinis, micro minis and all sorts of other clothing doesn’t really do that? perhaps we have grown cold and hard to it all? or perhaps lust is in the mind of the beholder….one man’s lust is another man’s oh-hum? am not a big fan of movies (regular ones like in theaters) but when we occasionally see one, we are shocked by what we see…..and the same goes for day time television, especially the soap operas. but that is my opinion and perhaps am just being a big prude? my point about porn in my original post is to try and get some justification on why porn is singled out as something that fws, who is normally open minded and tolerant, finds so wrong. if it’s because of lust then porn’s just an easy target because that’s part of it’s definition (albeit soooo subjective)….and so everything else gets a pass?

ptl@22: In that case, I agree with you. But I don’t see anyone singling out pornography as a “more sinful sin” or a particularly virulent societal evil while giving other forms of immoderation a free pass. FWS is talking about porn specifically because the original post is about porn.

See above. Reading the article before commenting is usually a good habit to inculcate.

i read the article and thought it was a joke…..having worked in silly con valley for years, there was a certain mythology that porn drove most of the advances in technology. that is why folks invented search engines, to find better porn and it just so happened similar algorithms could search for more mainstream stuff and make money too! same for virtual reality and streaming video…..much of the motivation behind the tech, was the lust for better porn. in a way very similar to what drove the home vhs market…..not saying it’s true, but that is the mythology. so to say that apple would not suddenly participate seemed foolish to me at the least and guess ultimately that turned out to be the case…duh? in any case, was still very surprised with fws’s strong comments!

by the way, with respect to tODDs comment regarding not having any feelings of lust when surrounded by beautiful naked women, and gettng massages no less….have to say have heard very similar agruments from gay men who say they could take a shower surrounded by a bunch of naked guys and not feel any sexual lust, perhaps the difference is the massage :)

    ptl @ 17

I can´t define what “pornography” is let alone find some bible passage that condemns it. the word “fornication” comes from the same greek word as pornography. and for that very reason I could also not provide a biblical understanding of what “fornication “. I just know that whatever it is, the bible says it is bad.

I CAN argue that anything that reduces another human being as just a “thing” or “object” simply has to be bad. I can argue this logically. Why do you ask ptl?

gosh. your standards are way to low. and yes I could be in a shower with other men and not feel lust. It does not even depend on what they look like (which was what my comment on standards was about for you… fat, ugly… not!).

That is probably one of the blessings of being gay. We have had to spend an entire life learning how to control how we respond to libido and urges. To not control them means we could be killed.

For a man to make make a pass at a woman is hardly ever a life or death decision. For a man to make a pass at the wrong man could mean being beaten to death. So self control is essential. Can you get that?

well then you have more control than tODD….he could not help but burn with lust if surrounded by a group of naked ladies!
but am pretty sure you cannot speak for all gay men, just like tODD can’t speak for any group. but would say, have to agree with tODD and say it would be hard for me to not burn with some kind of desire if in that situation. so my guess is, you are perhaps an exception for your group and all things being equal, except for one sexual preference, it would be difficult to not have some kind of thoughts, eh, when surrounded by those objects of our desires?
not to be argumentative, but do need to take issue with your comment about how safe it is for hetereo’s to make passes at women. hmm, perhaps you don’t have a lot of experience in that situation, but it is not as safe as you think. there are lots of jealous or protective boyfriends and husbands and brothers who do not take lightly if someone is making passes as their mate or sister. it might be safe to say a few men maybe have been beaten up or worse, for such things? so am not so sure if making a pass is hardly ever a life or death decision for heteros….certainly always risky, at least to one’s ego in the event of being turned down!
furthermore, am not so sure that all gay men feel as you do about the hazards of making passes at other men. in my own experience and from hearing about others experiences, it is not that unusual for gay men to make a pass at another man whether or not they think they are gay, and whether or not they are afraid of any bad consequences. so again, perhaps you are not representative of all gay men? in fact, would think in our society, more and more gays would take such a chance, as most people are sort of used to being in the company of all kinds of people. would agree with you, just as with heteros, if you make a pass at the wrong person…like a redneck or bigot kind of person, and especially if they are big and strong and don’t mind punching someone, you might regret it.
in summary, thanks for your feedback, but am not sure if it’s all that accurate. don’t get me wrong, we are not all experts on every thing, and none of us can speak for the experiences of an entire group, and am not being judgemental, it’s just my observation about human nature, and my opinion, that most folks get a little excited when we are around whatever happens to float our boat, so to speak. even if we don’t know them and that’s especially true for men, who are generally much more visually oriented than women, is that not right? that’s what you keep hearing from these experts out there in tv land anyway.
thank you fws and peace to you…….

Ack, ack, ack, why doesn’t someone just let Apple do what it wants to do without demanding that somehow they want to control the world? That they have SS troops hiding around every corner? If you do not like Apple, BUY SOMETHING ELSE!! No one is forcing you to buy it, use it, program for it. And the idea that a business has to be forced to sell a product they do not want to sell, ugh, what nonsense. Go down to the corner grocery store and demand a section selling Hard Core porn, peep shows/strippers etc or else you will announce to the world that they are control freaks, enemies of freedom etc. What a laugh? Are we serious? Who in the world wants to get into the business of trying to sell porn? What a headache, just from a business point of view. Why would anyone WANT TO DO THAT? To make a few extra dollars? Apple is by no means short of cash, are they? And now that they have passed Microsoft in value…well. Seems that they have done just fine without the nonsense of providing little boys and girls a forum for looking at naughty bits. As if there were not enough venues for THAT! And yes, you can actually see it on Macs, Ipads, iphones etc. So, get a LIFE!

How about folk ALLOWING businesses to decide what they want to sell? Or should we call in the ALCU to sue APPLE. “They are taking away our civil liberties, they will NOT SELL PORN!” “But can you get porn on your Apple device?” “Yes, but I want more/other et al porn” “Alright then, because YOU want it, YOU SHALL HAVE IT! God forbid that your desires and lusts go unfulfilled”

Yes, and then cry about FLASH, as if there was NO OTHER place to run FLASH on a computer in the WORLD! Yikes, whatever shall we do? Oops, I forgot, OsX supports Flash, just not mobile devices, HARDLY ANY Mobile devices, but let us just rag on APPLE because they DECIDED it was not worth it. And Android is just getting it, and WINMO is dying, but you can use it if you want. With all the Android devices out there, WHY do you need to have FLASH on an IPHONE? Because we do not want to change?
