Sporting News

The weekend’s big loser in sports was conventional expectations. My Oklahoma Sooners, BCS #1 for one week, were beaten by Missouri. This makes three successive weeks that the #1 team has bitten the dust (Oklahoma meeting the fate of Alabama and Ohio State). I’m sure the Sooner defeat is my fault, through a mechanism I don’t fully understand, due to my puffing them up on my blog.

Of greater significance, The San Francisco Giants upset the seemingly sure-thing Philadelphia Phillies to make it to the World Series.

And in the one upset that gave me great pleasure, the Texas Rangers beat the Yankees to go to their first World Series ever. And you’ve got to like the Rangers on a personal level. When they won the pennant, they celebrated with ginger ale instead of champagne out of consideration for an alcoholic teammate, series MVP Josh Hamilton, whose Christian faith turned his life around.

Nope. I don’t like the Rangers on any level. Any team from Texas should automatically be excluded from winning any championship on any level . . . unless they’re playing Ohio State or a team from California. To avoid that situation, Texas teams should be exempt from playoff contention in every sport.

As a long frustrated Rangers fan, I am excited they finally threw off the playoff curse.

As a Husker fan, I am struggling against a great wave of schadenfreude due to Iowa State’s defeat of Texas. Now if we can only beat Missouri and Iowa State balance will be restored to the universe.

In other sporting results contrary to expectations, my Spartans didn’t like down and die last weekend vs. Northwestern when they got behind. Is this a sign of the coming apocalypse? :^)

This rally is a distraction and an entertainment event. It will have no bearing, one way or the other, on the elections. Hopefully, some funny material will come out of it.

You’ve got to see Josh Hamilton’s MVP acceptance when they won. Christian humility at the height of glory, and I’d say it is authentic. But what do I know. I grew up going to Ranger’s games and watching from the bleachers. A team that was almost bankrupt beats the richest team in baseball. I like it!!!

The Pats beat the Chargers, barely and are now 5-1; Belichick is doing well with a young team, though I’m doubtful over the long term, due to weaknesses, mostly on defense and to some degree on offense. Moss needed to be traded due to a certain arrogance and lack of team play, though he was a power that will be missed.

On the plus side, one ought not to count Belichick out.

There is no need to feel shame about seeing texas lose, I mean Iowa State win. It is always a good day when texas loses except when it is against Texas Tech and then I ask why can’t they both lose?

Porcell, do you find it frustrating that the Patriots have struggled ever since the cheating season?

As an Alabama fan (it was my birthplace and the only team that mattered to me until I went to college elsewhere), I gloried in Oklahoma’s defeat. Every team that is currently unbeaten that loses helps me hope for a repeat.

    @ Alan @ 1: Don’t be hatin’!

I am a native Texan, and I could not be prouder of my Rangers! Because I was extremely busy during the regular season, I would only hear about how well they were doing. During the post-season, I got to enjoy watching them win, Win, WIN! It was nothing short of delicious to beat the Yankees and to secure that very elusive pennant. And I plan to watch them play well in the World Series. I am also very pleased with Josh Hamilton’s openness about his faith and the obvious respect his teammates have for him; I hope this measure of temporal success only gives him a bigger platform to reach others for Christ.

My post @ 7, earlier today, appears to have been made in the wrong thread :( My apologies.

I had a disappointing weekend watching my favored Phillies lose to the Giants. I congratulate the Giants on peaking at the perfect time, and playing the best ball they played all year, especially Cody Ross.

This should be one of the lowest rated World Series in history, but it may be a very good one. A classic Red-Blue matchup, with deep red Dallas taking on deep blue San Francisco. Interesting.
