    1. Obama will claim to be listening to the American people, while continuing to promote his “progressive” ideology, setting the stage for a colossal Democrat defeat in 2012

    2. The American people will continue its astonishing revision of view towards the Bush II presidency

3.Obama will continue to talk tough about Iran’s nuclear program, while essentially playing patty-cake politics.

    4. Todd will see the light, give up his progressive illusions, apologize to Don S and Porcell for past provocations, and become a died in the wool conservative.

    5. The Patriots will win the Superbowl XLV.

    1. The implementation of Internet censorship in the US brought to you by the Obama administration, the UN, Arab states, and the government of mainland China. Say goodbye to ‘offensive’ bloggers.

    2. Further legislation through executive orders from the Obama administration as Congress is deadlocked.

    3. Residents of the Pacific NW no longer care about professional sports.

    I predict:

    1) Sarah Palin won’t run for preasident, despite the clamor from her groupies to do so.

    2) President Obama’s groupies will become further disillusioned with his lack of ability to implement the socialist utopia. They’ll start accusing him of being a republican in disguise.

    3) On the other hand, Obama bumper stickers on cars will persist. Who knows why.

    4) The Tea Party movement will explode, as more and more ordinary people get fed up with the oppressive shenanigans going on in the name of the “common good.” Everybody will start reading the material at mises.org (OK, wishful thinking..)

    5) Yet another big-name, “religious right” evangelical will be found out to be a sinner, to the delight of other sinners.

    6) The well-being of the Delta Smelt will continue to be more important than the well-being of people, despite the recent ruling of a federal judge that turning off the water to the Central Valley was based on junk science.

    1. Matt Harrison’s loudest detractors will be those who should be praying for him to succeed, owing to their expectation of overnight miracles. Never mind that he has to deal with a largely antagonistic COP, most of whom should also be replaced if LCMS is really going to head back toward Lutheranism. Beginning with anyone who thought that salvation (read increased membership) was going to come from aping willowcreek or Fuller seminary (aka PLI).

    2. Americans will continue to bemoan the fact that students are falling behind other countries on standardized tests. Meanwhile library collections and faculties will continue to be cut, but there will be no lack of money to spend on football.

Climate change will be further supported by leftist apparatchiks and media clymers pointing out that the weather is getting hotter (or colder) and there are increasing (or decreasing) amounts of rain, snow, tornadoes, or hurricanes. Only if weather conditions are precisely the same year after year would the anthropocentric global warming (or cooling) mantra be silenced.

There are several severe crises that may emerge next year and reorder the shape of America and the World.

-State/Local debt defaults and unfunded pensions
-Seismic disruptions to Healthcare provision as regulations are implemented and American businesses and citizens respond
    -Nuclear Iran/Pakistan incidents
    -Military Defeat in Afghanistan
    -European debt defaults
-Skyrocketing interest rates (and a deepening recession) if macroeconomic policy continues to undermine the US Dollar
-Domestic unrest, including politically inspired mass violence

If we dodge all of those threats (and ones we don’t know about yet) then I’ll consider 2011 to be a good year whether things improve or not.

I predict that once again the ignominious and ignoble will headline the news, making their fortune and fame, while those who performed the truly influential acts will remain anonymous, but not in the light of eternity. I predict we will not hear about:

–the man who marries the young woman with the child who isn’t his. (Like Joseph)
–the woman who stays home to raise her four young children while the world tells her she is wasting her life.
–the husband who turns down the demanding advance in career to care for his ailing wife.
–the business owner who does not partake in the fantastic deal because it is corrupt.
–the church who continues to preach the gospel and deny the latest church growth trend.
–the artist who remains true to her ideals and refuses to bow to the latest pop trend, even though it results in lowered commercial success.
–the aging woman who gives her thousands to the mission field rather than to the plastic surgeon.

The aforementioned will remain anonymous, but only to the world.

Unemployment will stabilize at 9.0%. Continued unpredictability in the Western economies will result in Africa becoming a serious emerging market for investors. Something bad will happen in some 2/3 world country and people will blame America. Obama will continue to pursue Bush era policies wrapped in Socialist rhetoric, resulting in the “Left” moving even farther left, and the country charging full-tilt to the “Right”, resulting in an increasingly Facist state. Someone in Israel and/or Palestine will launch a rocket and/or shoot someone.

Carl Vehse’s prediction that leftist apparatchiks and media shills will continue their fevered politicization of the complex issue of global warming is well considered.

However, one may reasonably predict that scientists studying this issue will continue to not come close to establishing empirically or theoretically whether contemporary climate change is normal or man-made. Atmospheric scholars, including especially Lindzen of M.I.T., are well aware of the limitations of science, and are appalled at the crass politics around the issue.

In general, an easy prediction for 2011 is that the Left, instead of facing serious issues such as unsustainable debt and Iran’s nuclear threat, will claim climate and poverty doomsday that requires post-haste a government solution.

I’ve racked my brain trying to come up with an actual prediction (read: guess) for 2011, but I’ve got nothing. Things seem poised for more of the same. More muddling through this economy. More political malaise, the new Congress notwithstanding. More national debt. More terrorism, and an order of magnitude more fear of terrorism. More blaming, and more people ducking blame by using the insipid phrase “the blame game”.

But that’s boring. The only way to surefire Prediction Glory is to make a rather unforeseen, falsifiable claim and manage to get it right. So I’ll shoot for the moon and say that some event (death or general incapacity) will cause Kim Jong-Un to succeed his father as leader of North Korea. This succession will involve military action on the Korean peninsula.

I’d also predict that the Republican majority in the House won’t have any notable conservative effect on our federal government. But then, that’s the sort of prediction that people will disagree as much now as they will a year from now as to whether I got it right. Which makes it a perfect prediction, because it’s all about how you game the analysis. A corollary, then: people will game the analysis, according to their particular political biases.

1.) A minor political/celebrity scandal will put an end to talks of Sarah Palin running for president in 2012, but she will continue to be a political figure and a television pundit.

2.) The Patriots will beat the Saints 34-27 in the Super Bowl.

3.) Sarah Palin will blame the media for #1.

4.) A spending reduction bill will come from Washington, D.C. spearheaded by the come-back-kid, president Obama. It will tip its hat to Paul Ryan’s ideas of entitlement reform, like some means-testing and providing some different options for younger people paying into the system. But the thing that will be the bargaining chip with Republicans in the House will be cuts in defense spending, which Obama will have to parade Bob Gates around as the divinely inspired authority on the subject to get it through. It will also do some surface level stuff about simplifying the tax code, which the deficit commission demands, but nothing will really happen there. Many things will be saved as campaign issues in 2012 in this regard.

5.) Mitch Daniels will emerge as the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination before the end of the year, but it will be very close because Tim Pawlenty will be right at his heels.

Carl Vehse’s post #9 is most important as well.

My belief, but no prediction is:

Polictical correctness will be the seed that germinates, not because it is right, but because most people have no belief in God. It isn’t the correctness of our government, but our belief in Christ Jesus our LORD and Savior. He is above all all, HE is who died for our sins, if we but trust in Him as Savior.

Healthcare will NOT get drastically changed. (“drastically” being the key word) Some minor changes will be made to it, but that’s all.

A few hundred billion dollars will be projected to get cut from the Federal Budget over the next decade – no more than a 5% total projected difference. This will be heralded as a great victory by Republicans.

We will still be heavily involved in Iran and Afghanistan, still having well over 150,000 troops deployed between the two.

Two major floods are going to happen in India, Indonesia, and Cambodia.

No major earthquake destruction in 2011.

Wheat prices will jump to more than $8 per bushel.

Major drought across central Africa will have several famines occur. Continued warfare and instability in the area will complicate relief efforts and over 100,000,000 people will be affected.

I also think that, by the end of 2011, enough conservatives and liberals will begin to ask out loud what the mission in Afghanistan is. When this happens, the administration will decide that there is little reason to remain there and will draw down the troop levels.

    WeCanKnow – 32

Know one knows when the LORD will return. Harold Camping made a prediction that the LORD would return September 1994, it never happened.

“Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

WebMonk (@30), “Healthcare will NOT get drastically changed”? Oh, come on. That’s as mushy as my predicting no “notable conservative effect” (@26).

However, I’m fascinated by your prediction that “We will still be heavily involved in Iran and Afghanistan”. Iran? Now that’s going for the clairvoyant gusto!

WeCanKnow (@32), can you post your email address here? I have some real estate and financial transactions I’d like to set up with you for mid-May. I mean, surely you won’t be needing your house come May 22, so you won’t mind signing it over to me then. If predicted events do not come to pass, I’ll be happy to sell it back to you for a reasonable price, minus handling fees.

WebMonk, unless you were referring to a divisional game, the Steelers can’t play the Patriots in the Super Bowl. They are both in the AFC.

I am predicting Falcons over Steelers.

Unfortunately, the Falcons won’t get to gloat long, because the world will end before summer.

I used to try and give Harold Camping’s trance-like, robot-like voice the benefit of the doubt by guessing that perhaps he had a stroke. Now I’m wondering if the cause isn’t perhaps that he is possessed.

Wow, I was hitting on all cylinders with my posts, wasn’t I?!

I had just looked at Jones’ Patriots-Saints prediction and had Patriots on the mind. I meant Steelers will defeat the Packers.

Packers, Patriots – they both start with P. Sort of like that whole Swiss-Sweden thingy. ;-D

And while I’m at the whole letter mix-up thing, let’s replace the “n” in Iran with a “q”.

If the Packers make it to the Superbowl, they will defeat the Steelers.

And I still think there will be significantly fewer US troops in both places by year’s end.

kerner – how about we put a few more specifics to that prediction. There are around 180,000 there now, and I’ll say it will still be above 155,000 at the end of 2011 – less than a 10% reduction.

About what would you qualify as significantly fewer? We’ll see how things end on December 31st.

Oh, unless of course the world ends on May 21st. :-D And then it won’t matter because I’m part of a church and haven’t obeyed the Great and All-Seeing Slurring One, Camping, so I guess I would wind up in hell.

wow. Today is REALLY not my day. A 180,000 to 155,000 is a 14% drop, not a sub-10% drop.

Maybe you consider getting down to 155,000 as being a significant drop, so maybe we could both end up being right.

OK you’re on. Should we do an over under? I’ll predict that there are fewer than 155,000 troops (total) stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. I would predict a bigger decrease, but I am less sure about Afghanistan. Fair enough? Should we commit to anything to make this…er…interesting?

I predict that the Packers will win the Superbowl, because predictions can be wishful thinking.
I also predict that in the following year, more than once I will look around an wonder at what the world is coming to. Then I will remember that I am safe in God’s hands and I will pray for the rest of the world, whether it be for continued faith or new belief.
    Come, Lord Jesus!

The Falcons will just barely defeat the Patriots to win the Super Bowl.
    Unemployment will rise.
Obamacare will begin to die a slow death.
The value of gold will drastically drop.
