Joplin is all but destroyed

Joplin, Missouri–an hour’s drive from where I grew up, where we would often go when we wanted a “big city”–was struck by a tornado that is said to have destroyed three-fourths of the city, killing 89 people!

UPDATE: Now the report is that “only” one fourth of the city of 50,000 was destroyed. But the death toll has risen to 116.

We’re 45 minutes south of them. Those poor folks are dealing with another group of storms coming through their town this morning. Mobilizing efforts at our local congregation to send goods and people.

I was born in Carthage, Mo. We lived on Route 66 about 11 miles from Joplin. I lived there from 0 -3 and from 13 – 19. I spent many nights and days on Rangeline Road in Joplin. I still have many relatives in the area, and as far as we can tell they are all alright. I was shocked last night when I first read about this – suddenly disaster became very real.
