Glen Campbell keeps on playing

Glen Campbell is not just another pop celebrity, though that’s what he’s best known for.  He happens to be a great, great guitar player.  I’ve heard him play.  Anyway, the news came out awhile ago that he has Alzheimer’s.  What I didn’t know is that he is still giving concerts!

Here is a link to a review of one of those concerts, which sounds quite amazing.  It also includes a priceless quotation:

“I have Alzheimer’s?” he asks Kim, 53, his wife of 29 years… “Well, doggone … what’s that?” Kim gently reminds him that it’s the reason he’s been having trouble remembering things, but Campbell prefers a different explanation…. “God just cleared a lot of things out… It was crowded up there. I’ve been trying to get rid of that crap for years.”

via Althouse: Glen Campbell, despite Alzheimer’s disease, gave a concert last Thursday..

I also heard a new recording a few days ago in which Campbell played with Dick Dale, Chris Isaak and Brian Setzer. Really nice stuff.

I understand that things like playing music and doing algebra can slow the effects of Alzheimers, so it’s probably one of the best things he can do for himself.

    Witchita lineman. Good song.

Also have to admit I like “Rhinestone Cowboy.”

Sad news for the man. God have mercy on him.

As far as I know, no one does Jimmy Webb’s songs better than Glen!

You’re right, Helen. Including Jimmy Webb! This is one important exception to the general “singer-songwriter” principle that it’s better when musical artists perform songs that they themselves have written.

Another song that Glen did that’s rather obscure: “Reason to Believe.” I think it’s the best version, even better than the Tim Hardin’s, the composer.
