Lyle Lovett confesses his faith with his church

Three generations–all members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Klein, Texas–confess their faith in the words of the Nicene Creed, which itself goes back through generation after generation in the church of Jesus Christ. First we hear from Erich Klenk, 97 years old. Then we hear from singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett (of whom I am a big fan). Then we hear from fourth-grader Erin Pali. The effect of hearing the creed from these very different and yet very united Christians is deeply moving, as I think you will agree.

Very cool…I love Lyle Lovett’s music and this gives me yet another reason to think well of him as a person.

It warms this Aggie’s heart to hear from another Lutheran Aggie. Now if only he wasn’t a country music star, but I guess nobody is perfect. ;)

    Very, very cool.

Lyle has a Luther hymn, I believe, on his latest album.

And I thought all Aggies were country music fans. :(

Be thankful! He isn’t megadeth and he hasn’t signed up for a “tin star” preaching license in lcms! :)

His is a very “alternative country.” I don’t know of too many people who don’t appreciate his music, even if they aren’t country fans.

Dr.L21 – Not sure how it is in Texas but where I come from (Northern Wisconsin) heavy metal (your favorite if I remember correctly) and country were not mutually exclusive. In fact the music at a party would largely be a playlist containing both. Lots of AC/DC and Hank Williams Jr.

Bob, you are right! He sings Luther’s “Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word” on his latest album “Release Me”! You can sample it on iTunes. Thanks, Bob, for that bit of intelligence. I’ve got to get that album in any event.

Folks should also check out the cover — Lyle tied up in rope.
    The album title: “Release Me.”

    Very Lutheran.

Oh, I just like pickin’ on the country fans. It comes from being in a land where every other station was country and the rest were Spanish language or family friendly “christian” stations. I do like some country, but I am not remotely an avid fan. Also, while I primarily listen to Metal and Hard Rock, I have a wide variety of musical tastes. Currently, I have been “rocking out” to this group http://www.koinemusic.com.

@Helen, but I like Megadeth :) in fact was listening to Symphony of Destruction not too long ago.

I think Lyle would be better classified not so much as a country singer but as one hell of a storyteller.

My favorite song title of his: “Don’t Touch My Hat”
    :)

Bob, I have to vote for “If I Had A Boat.” Honorable mentionsfor “L.A. County” and “Walk Through the Bottomland.”

This blog may have peaked for me – a Lyle Lovett post complete with a Symphony of Destruction mention. Where can we go from here? WHERE, I ASK YOU?!

One of my very favorite memories with my wife is two-stepping to LL when he played a friend’s wedding. We were the only ones on the floor.

I read several comments here before viewing the video. I must say, I’m relieved the video didn’t play up Mr. Loveett’s celebrity status. In fact, it made no mention of it — or him — at all! I think that’s great!

You can listen to the entirety of Lovett’s “Keep Us Steadfast” on his MySpace page. It is a fairly straightforward reading of the hymn.

Don’t Touch My Hat and If I Had a Boat are about equal in greatness, IMO.

I think Lyle and Dave Ellefson have collaboration coming out later this year, “Lyle and Dave Sing Luther: Big and Loud.”

    Well, Morgan…

    Congrats.

You’ve just made me violate the Commandment about not coveting.

    Seriously, what a fantastic story!
