Opening Day!

The baseball season begins again! Hope springs eternal. I add reading box scores to my morning routine. Every season has its drama, intrigues, and some team that comes out of nowhere. Please report on the state of your team. What are your predictions?

As a Rangers fan I great the season with both excitement and trepidation. Can they make it three in a row in the AL and finally win the Series? I hope for it, but I doubt; the odds are just to great.

I am looking forward though to checking out some good minor league ball with the Tennessee Smokies, the Double A affiliate of the hapless Cubs.

“Great” should of course be “greet”.

Looking forward to the SF Giants staying healthy and competing hard for the division title, and another run at the World Series! Spring has indeed sprung!

My two teams are the Angels and the Phillies. There is a lot of optimism in both cities this year, with both teams having stellar pitching staffs and the Angels having also acquired Albert Pujols. The big issue for the Phillies is their team age — can they hold it together for one more year? On paper, they should win their division, but injuries and declining performance due to age could be problematic in a division that will be strong this year. In the AL West, the Rangers and Angels should battle all year for the division, though there is a good chance that both teams will make the playoffs, thanks to the extra wild card slot this year.

An Angels-Phillies World Series would be the dream! And dreams are what April is all about in the world of baseball.

Our team won its first game. I would love to see them win #12 in 2012; however, whether that will happen or not remains to be seen. There’s a new skipper and changes in players. What happens will happen, but whatever the outcome, this will still be “Baseball Heaven”.

    “…the hapless Cubs.”

So, what’s the opposite of that? Hapful? Having much hap? The Cubs are low on hap?

    Any English majors out there?

    L. H. and other Cardinal fans, do you have any basis for your optimism? I like the Cardinals, but what will they do without Pujols? And didn’t they lose some other good players? Did they do anything to compensate for the loss?

Pete – I found this on the internet so it just must be true:

    Main Entry: hapless  [hap-lis]
    Part of Speech: adjective
    Definition: unfortunate
Synonyms: behind the eightball, cursed, hexed, ill-fated, ill-starred, infelicitous, jinxed, jonah, loser, luckless, miserable, poor fish, sad sack, snakebit, star-crossed, unhappy, unlucky, untoward, voodooed, woeful, wretched
    Antonyms: fortuitous, fortunate, lucky, well-off

I think just about all of the synonyms work for the Cubbies, while I would never associate any of the antonyms with them.

Go Texas!!! I think we make it back. But it will be interesting to see how everyone else looks this season. The Tigers are the big favorites this year. But it’s a long season. So anything can happen.

As an Oakland A’s fan, I predict we will be fighting with the Mariners not to be in last place. The Angels and Rangers are both formidable opponents this year. It might be interesting to see how the “demigod come down from the heavens” (to quote Coco Crisp), Yoenis Cespedes, pans out for us.

tdoig – Nope opening day is today, though some teams will play for the first time tomorrow. If I’m not mistaken the Mariners and the A’s have already played regular season games a few weeks back in Asia, which is why they each have a record on opening day of 1-1.

Our team is a minor league team; that means if any player shows promise, he immediately leaves. But the ball park is just a year old and there isn’t a bad seat, and the tickets are relatively cheap. Play ball!
