Crucifixions are back

Mobs in Egypt are reportedly crucifying opponents of the new president.  From Michael Carl:

The Arab Spring takeover of Egypt by the Muslim Brotherhood has run amok, with reports from several different media agencies that the radical Muslims have begun crucifying opponents of newly installed President Mohammed Morsi.

Middle East media confirm that during a recent rampage, Muslim Brotherhood operatives “crucified those opposing Egyptian President Muhammad Morsi naked on trees in front of the presidential palace while abusing others.” . . .

Center for Security Policy Senior Fellow Clare Lopez cited chapter and verse from the Quran to explain that crucifixions are not simply normal for Islam, they’re demanded.

“Crucifixion is a hadd punishment, stipulated in the Quran, Sura 5:33, and therefore an obligatory part of Shariah,” Lopez said. “It’s been a traditional punishment within Islam since the beginning, even though it’s not exclusively Islamic. The Romans used it too.

“So, the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood haven’t the option to not include crucifixion within their legal code. It’s obligatory to comply with Shariah.

Could this just be another anti-Islamic rumor?  Or not?  If anyone knows more, please post a comment.  This is also reported here and here.

Looks like this story began with Ray Ibrahim. Back in July, Ibrahim was responsible for the spread of a story about a plan to destroy the pyramids. (Remember that one?) Ibrahim’s “sources” for this crucifixion story are four Arabic websites, which all used a single source – a report appearing on the website of the Arab-language bureau for Sky News. But the story hasn’t been picked up by the main Sky News site. And there’s no film or photographic evidence supporting it. (This supposedly happened right in front of Morsi’s presidential palace!)

So, Tom. What you’re saying is that this is probably true.

What I’m saying is there’s a difference between reporting and repeating. So far, since Friday, we have one, unconfirmed report on an Arab-language website. But a multitude of English-language sites (none of them news sites that actually do their own field reporting or fact-checking) that simply repeat the claim made by the original website and Raymond Ibrahim.

This Sura says “5:33 Those who wage war against God and His Messenger and strive to spread corruption in the land should be punished by death, crucifixion, the amputation of an alternate hand and foot or banishment from the land: a disgrace for them in this world, and then a terrible punishment in the Hereafter, 34 unless they repent before you overpower them: in that case bear in mind that God is forgiving and merciful.”
Hey, just another peace loving religion…..

Sorry, C-CS, but according to the original story, the people allegedly crucified weren’t Christians, but secular protestors (who were demonstrating against Morsi’s shutdown of an opposition media outlet).

“This is simply not true,” said the official who asked not to be named as he could not speak in an official capacity for the [Muslim Brotherhood]. “I have seen the reports, but none give any details except to quote one reporter who claimed they took place. There was some violence, but we have not, nor will we ever support that sort of action.”

Eyewitnesses at a number of palace protests told Bikyamasr.com that protesters outside the presidential palace became “angry and began fighting, but nobody was stripped naked and crucified.”

… In all the links given [by Ibrahim and others], including to local Egyptian media, again the “evidence” refers to the Sky News reporter, but further details are not found.

… The Brotherhood official believes the reporting of so-called “crucifixions” and anti-Christian actions by Morsi and his government, “are intended to spark something in the West and get them to hate us. But people are not so ignorant and they look for evidence, actual evidence …”
