NFL reaches agreement with Refs

The NFL reached a tentative labor agreement with the professional referees.  There will be no more replacement refs, as of the Thursday night game.  The Packers were a sacrifice that caused the reconciliation.   I was afraid President Obama would assure his re-election by sending out troops, not to break a strike, but to break the owners and their lockout..

Sorry about that, NFL chief says of replacements – CNN.com.

I’m happy the real refs are back, but I was surprised at the deal. The NFL still managed to get almost all of what it wanted. The pay scale agreed to is very similar to what the league proposed, the League got the 21 additional refs it wanted (some or all of which will be full time).

The unions big win was an agreement to phase out the pension by 2016 for current refs instead of ending it immediately. New hires will get no pension (they’ll have a 401k with an employer contribution).

Given the perceived leverage due to the horrible replacement refs, I would have thought the union would have gotten more.

Now that the replacement refs are gone, there will be no more questionable calls. None. And we will all live happily ever after.

Single-data-point judgments are to be avoided, of course, but man, if you ever wanted an example that made unions out to be reasonable groups, while the big-money managers came off as seriously indifferent to what the average person thought, caring about nothing but money and power, you could do worse than to rely on this case.
