May the Mouse be with you

Disney has bought Lucasfilm and is promising a reboot of the Star Wars series, with Episode 7 promised for 2015.

Given that the Star Wars episodes have been more or less disappointing since the original trilogy and that the imaginary universe has been given a certain closure, do you welcome more Star Wars movies?

Do you expect a Disneyfication effect on what was originally an innovative independent production?   (Will the aliens now wear white gloves and have long eye-lashes?)

I for one am actually glad. Lucas was killing his own product.

Could go either way. I think if they get Tim Zahn for the script and Joss Whedon to direct, the new movies could be phenomenal.

I’m curious whether the new movies would follow any of the storyline set up by the officially approved books, or set a new story in the cracks of the story set up (but it’s a pretty well saturated story world), or maybe just integrate some of the new book-only characters and ignore the book plots entirely.

Mara Jade would be great in a movie. She’s a solid character in her own right and a perfect foil for Luke. And, of course, she’s a Force-wielding warrior chica.

I expect Disney will treat its new acquisition the way it did Pixar, and keep its hands off the creative side of Lucasfilm. (Lucas will still be involved as creative consultant.) What Disney gets out of the deal is (A.) a huge fan base that complains about the movies but buys a lot of merchandise anyways, and (B.) tremendous cost savings when ILM becomes the in-house effects department for all of Disney’s films. And honestly, the franchise was already heading downhill with the original trilogy. Ewoks?

What PinonCoffee said. I’m cautiously optimistic if Timothy Zahn, Kiss Sheldon, or Mara Jade are involved.

I’m with 2 and 4. If the films could be based on the Thrawn Trilogy–wow, cinematic magic! But I pity the actors/actress who have to take on the roles of Han, Leia and Luke. They would have such a rough time living up to it.

Most of the conversation online has surrounded the idea of three movies following Return of the Jedi as to timeline. Mistake. First, no one could replace the original cast in such an effort and you can not take it so far into the future that you do not need them. second the original three need to be saved from the most recent three catastrophes. As much as I love the originals, that was my generation, the only option they have is to reboot. I will hate the new product and so will everyone over 40. But it will secure the product’s survival for another couple of generations that will see it as their own.

I’m interested in seeing how Disney will incorporate Leia into their line of Disney Princesses.

Zahn fans, to date, Timothy Zahn has not been contacted by Disney concerning the movie.

With how well Disney has dealt with the Marvelverse, I am optimistic about Episode 7, which by the way is not a reboot by definition. I am interested to see how they will proceed as the original actors are fast aging out of playing their characters even taking into account the extended universe timeline. I think Disney would be wise to follow some of the other characters that developed in the extended universe. I would love to see them develop Michael Stackpole’s X-Wing and I, Jedi. I would also love to see them develop Zahn’s Heir to the Empire, even if it meant new actors playing beloved characters.

Oh and Disney if you follow the story line that kills Chewie, I will hate you forever.

A new Ford, Fisher, and Hamill vehicle? Star Wars meets Cocoon / Space Cowboys / Grumpy Old Men / *batteries not included. Did I forget anything?

I second Pinion Coffee’s recommendation of Zahn as scriptwriter and Whedon as director. Moreover, if Nathan Fillion were cast as the “new” Han Solo, I would be all kinds of happy.

I’m guessing Disney will sink $200 million into Episode VII. Which means they’ll be motivated to play it safe with every aspect of the film. Which means cinematic fast food, i.e., filling and familiar entertainment, but nothing special.

I wish I owned a whole bunch of old stock in Disney! What with Pixar, Veggie Tales, and now Lucas! That would be like Forest Gump getting his first Apple stock.

How bad could it be? It’s not like they would introduce a cartoonish character with floppy ears and puppet like movements who would speak in a hokey Jamaican accent and act like a drunken 3 year old. Surely not.

    I can just see it.
2015 Star Wars Begins: Episode 4 remake for kids who prefer CGI to the old models
2024 The Adventures of Star Wars: Star Wars Begins remake for children who cannot abide prehistoric 2015 production quality.
The children of 2015 will say knowingly to each other, “I like the old Star Wars better.” They’ll mean 2015.
