Women are giving Trump the lead

Women are giving Trump the lead July 27, 2015

Donald Trump’s habit of shooting off his mouth and provoking outrage isn’t slowing him down at all.  The public must find his lack of politically-correct inhibition refreshing.  The new Zogby poll shows him leading the Republican pack among likely primary voters.

Overall, he leads 20%, with Jeb Bush coming in at 16%.  He leads among conservatives (18%), moderates (28%), and independents (31%).  But his big support comes from women, 26% of whom support him.

Among men, in contrast, he comes in fourth, with only 12%!  (Bush 21%, Rand Paul 17%, Scott Walker 16%).  And among actual Republicans–who for some reason in many states have opened their primaries to non-Republicans–Trump is second at 16%, with Bush leading at 21%.

The bottom line is that it’s women and Independents who are largely responsible for the Trump phenomenon.   Any theories why women like him so much?

From Trump Leads in New Zogby Poll:

The new Zogby Analytics poll of 256 likely voters was conducted online July 22-23 shows Mr. Trump leading with the support of 20% of those polled.

He is followed by former Florida Governor Jeb Bush with 16%, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker 12%, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul 9%, neurosurgeon and author Dr. Ben Carson 7%, Florida Senator Marco Rubio and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee 6% each, Texas Senator Ted Cruz 5%, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie 3%, Ohio Governor John Kasich and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal 2%, and everyone else at 1% or less. . . .

Mr. Bush leads among men with 21% to 17% for Mr. Paul, 16% for Mr. Walker, and 12% for Mr. Trump. But Mr. Trump has a huge lead among women — 26% to 10% for Mr. Bush and 7% for Mr. Walker.

Mr. Bush holds a five point margin over Mr. Trump among Republicans –21% to 16%, with Mr. Walker at 10%. But Mr. Trump is garnering almost one in three self-identified independents (31%) to 15% for Mr. Walker and 13% for Mr. Bush. Mr. Trump also leads among conservatives 18% to 16% each for Mr. Bush and Mr. Walker – but with a campaign and persona hardly known for its moderation, Mr. Trump holds an eight point margin over Mr. Bush among moderates (28%-20%), with 12% for Mr. Rubio.
