Last year almost to the day we blogged about Rev. Henry Gerecke, the LCMS military chaplain who was pressed into service as the Protestant chaplain at Nuremberg, charged with ministering to the Nazi war criminals who were on trial there, many of whom were executed. There is now book out about Chaplain Gerecke: Mission at Nuremberg: An American Army Chaplain and the Trial of the Nazis by Tim Townsend.
It tells how he used both firmness and compassion, applying both the Law and the Gospel, in an effort to bring these moral monsters to repentance and to Christ. Which he apparently did with at least 4 of the 11 who were hanged. Then again, Hermann Goering repudiated Christianity just hours before he committed suicide by biting a smuggled cyanide tablet, calling Jesus “just another smart Jew.” After the jump, an excerpt from a review of the book.

We felt good that we killed Osama bin Laden and seemed to have defeated al-Qaeda. But they were nothing compared to the resurgent jihadist army of the Islamic State (formerly known as ISIS, most recently calling themselves ISIL, for “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant”). They are armed to the teeth with American weapons and other equipment that had been abandoned in Iraq. And they have vast wealth from looting banks and taking over oil fields. If you are worried that the U.S. is reigniting the war in Iraq, don’t be. Despite the atrocities being committed by ISIS/The Islamic State, our airstrikes are designed simply to protect Americans in threatened cities and to protect those Yazidis besieged on that mountain (that siege is reportedly over, as the Yazidis have now escaped). But, according to two Washington Post analysts, there is no effort to stop ISIS as such or to win back the large amount of territory they have taken over. [Read more…]
