Harvard’s Black Mass

Harvard University will hold a Black Mass this evening, sponsored by the Cultural Studies Club and conducted by New York Satanists.  Though the rite centers upon the profanation of a Communion wafer–usually sexual, according to Wikipedia, probably having something to do with the naked woman on the altar–the club is assuring the public that a consecrated Host will not be used.

UPDATE:  The club now says that the Black Mass will be held off-campus.

UPDATE:  The club now says that it could not find a venue and that it will no longer sponsor the event.  The organized prayers against the Black Mass must have worked!

Satanism is having a Reformation

The group that is trying to erect a statue of Baphomet next to the Ten Commandments at the Oklahoma state capitol represents a new strain of Satanism.  It isn’t just about black masses, occultism, and deliberate acts of evil.  The new Satanism is allying itself with atheism in an attempt to destroy traditional religions.  And yet just as the atheists are having a schism, so are the Satanists, with orthodox devil worshipers complaining that the new groups are not real Satanists.  So reports Joseph Laycock at Religion Dispatches, excerpted after the jump.

Think of it as an atheist Reformation, with a greater emphasis on spreading the bad news, replacing ritualism with a personal faithlessness, and de-emphasizing damnation by works.

The Satanic monument for the public square

This is the monument that the Satanists are trying to erect next to that of the Ten Commandments at the Oklahoma state capitol.
