Here is the latest about the Black Mass in Oklahoma City that we blogged about: The Catholic Archdiocese of the city sued to stop the ritual on the grounds that the Host was stolen. So the organizers returned the communion wafer to the Archdiocese, which then dropped the suit. But we learned more: The Host was allegedly provided by a priest in Turkey who is secretly a Satanist. And, in addition to the Black Mass, the group is planning a “Satanic exorcism,” which will attempt to drive the Holy Spirit out of a Christian. [Read more…]
My native Oklahoma is a conservative state, and yet the city manager of Oklahoma City has allowed renting out part of the Civic Center for a Satanic Black Mass. Unlike the kerfluffle at Harvard (see here and here), the group putting on this event has reportedly acquired a consecrated host, which they will then publicly desecrate.
Now the group has insisted that it will not break any laws. That would presumably rule out the normal Black Mass practices involving urine, excrement, semen, and the ritual abuse of a naked woman. So instead of being a “traditional” Satanic liturgy, I guess this it will be a “contemporary service.” But they will do something nasty to the Body of Christ.* And if the city manager will hold them to their promise not to break any laws, what about Oklahoma’s blasphemy law? Catholics at Harvard have come out with a good statement on the Black Mass that had been scheduled for last night but, apparently due to the public outcry, was cancelled. The op-ed piece in the Crimson, the university’s student newspaper, gives details about how the Body of Christ is desecrated during the Satanic rite and draws parallels to the burning of a Quran. Harvard University will hold a Black Mass this evening, sponsored by the Cultural Studies Club and conducted by New York Satanists. Though the rite centers upon the profanation of a Communion wafer–usually sexual, according to Wikipedia, probably having something to do with the naked woman on the altar–the club is assuring the public that a consecrated Host will not be used.
UPDATE: The club now says that the Black Mass will be held off-campus.
UPDATE: The club now says that it could not find a venue and that it will no longer sponsor the event. The organized prayers against the Black Mass must have worked!
The group that is trying to erect a statue of Baphomet next to the Ten Commandments at the Oklahoma state capitol represents a new strain of Satanism. It isn’t just about black masses, occultism, and deliberate acts of evil. The new Satanism is allying itself with atheism in an attempt to destroy traditional religions. And yet just as the atheists are having a schism, so are the Satanists, with orthodox devil worshipers complaining that the new groups are not real Satanists. So reports Joseph Laycock at Religion Dispatches, excerpted after the jump.
Think of it as an atheist Reformation, with a greater emphasis on spreading the bad news, replacing ritualism with a personal faithlessness, and de-emphasizing damnation by works.
This is the monument that the Satanists are trying to erect next to that of the Ten Commandments at the Oklahoma state capitol.
