Terrorist weekend

As the world focuses on ISIS, we are reminded that we also have to contend with our old terrorist foe al-Qaeda.  In the African nation of Mali, an al-Qaeda affiliated group attacked a luxury hotel, taking 170 people, many of them foreign tourists, hostage.  Commandos stormed the hotel, but some 20 hostages  were killed, including one American.

Meanwhile, in Belgium, the capital city of Brussels was put into a state of lockdown–with all public events cancelled and people being urged to stay in their homes–in face of what authorities called evidence of an “imminent,” Paris-style attack.  Belgian police arrested 16 jihadists.

Terrorist kills five in Tennessee

Yet another Islamic terrorist attack on American soil.  Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeezhis shot up two military facilities in Chattanooga, killing four Marines.  He also wounded two other service members and a police officer before he was shot and killed.  The authorities are investigating any terrorist connections he might have.  ISIS has called for “lone wolf” attacks during Ramadan, which ends Friday.

UPDATE:  One of the wounded died, bringing the toll to five.

The French 9/11.

Islamic terrorists, having attacked the offices of the humor magazine Charlie Hebdo, killing twelve,  struck again in Paris, attacking t a Jewish kosher grocery store, killing four hostages.  The French held a huge rally Sunday–the largest in the history of that nation of popular uprisings–in support of the victims of the terrorists, and other European nations are reportedly reconsidering their openness to Islamic immigrants, many of whom have been flocking to fight with ISIS in Syria.  The French periodical Le Monde is referring to “the French September 11.” [Read more...]

Terrorism in Australia

An Islamic terrorist took over a coffee house in Sydney, holding 17 hostages for 16 hours until police moved in.  Two hostages and the gunman were killed.  The terrorist was an Australian of Iranian heritage, though he was reportedly a Sunni activist.  Authorities believe he acted alone and was not part of a larger plot.  (Though, arguably, foreign threats may be easier to counter than those of domestic origin.) Terrorists attack Canada

Days after Islamic terrorists used a car to kill a soldier in Ottawa–Canada’s capital–a terrorist killed another soldier at the National War Memorial and rushed inside the Canadian Parliament building.  After some 30 shots were fired, a Sergeant-of-arms killed the attacker.  Mounties reportedly were searching for other gunmen throughout the city. International terrorism

Islamic terrorists attacked a shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya, killing as many as 65 people and wounding some 200.  Also this weekend, Islamic suicide bombers attacked All Saints Anglican Church in Peshawar, Pakistan, killing (at latest count) 81 people and wounding 140. [Read more...]
