Echoes of the past: What next in Crouch story?

CrouchSo far, the Paul Crouch story has proceeded along the traditional lines of a low-level conservative sex scandal, by which I mean a scandal that is not part of some hypernews event (think Jim Bakker era) or a political crusade (think minister with strong ties to the White House).

For those just tuning in, here is a Los Angeles Times summary paragraph on the drama so far:

On Sunday, The Times detailed the fierce legal battle that Crouch successfully fought to keep secret a 1998 agreement that paid Enoch Lonnie Ford $425,000 in exchange for staying silent about his allegations of a sexual encounter between him and Crouch in 1996 at a TBN-owned cabin near Lake Arrowhead. When Ford wrote a manuscript last year that contained details of his allegations, Crouch went to court to enforce the 1998 agreement.

Stop and think about this for a minute. In the age of talk radio, blogs and major leaps in alternative “Christian entertainment,” how many people out there are all that interested in televangelism? On top of that, there is the fact that the vast majority of Protestant megachurches have movie screens hanging in the front of their alleged sanctuaries. In other words, video-centric Protestantism has become the norm.

Nevertheless, there are a few signs that reporter William Lobdell’s story may have legs, even if another full-scale Pearlygate media storm fails to match the power of Rathergate. Then again, perhaps CBS has a new incentive to cover the TBN story.

As one would expect, the Los Angeles Times promptly did a follow-up, one noting that lots of people were buzzing about its original story, but that the accused was denying everything. Crouch would stay put — for now — pending further, well, revelations.

“We prepared for the worst and prayed for the best,” knowing that the allegations would be made public over the weekend, said Paul Crouch Jr., eldest son of the pastor and an executive at the network. “So far our prayers are being answered. Most of the e-mails and calls have been very positive.”

He said the network received unsolicited backing from dozens of Christian leaders who called or e-mailed their support, including author Josh McDowell; Doug Wead, a onetime advisor to former President George H.W. Bush; and singers Pat Boone and Carman.

Lots of shocking news there. Doug Wead? Wow, Carman.

The televangelist’s network also offered a traditional response to the newspaper’s evidence of the earlier settlement: “TBN officials said that Crouch agreed to the settlement to avoid costly litigation and scandal.” There was nothing to it, in other words. To which the Times responded: “Neither the civil court judge or private arbitrator ruled on the validity of Ford’s claims — only that the 1998 settlement prevented their disclosure.”

Meanwhile, there is a ripple of interest out there in new media land, symbolized by nearly 1,500 comments on a Yahoo message board. The more important news is that the omnipresent Ted Olsen of the Christianity Today digital desk has decided to run with the story. That validates it in mainline evangelical circles. On the conservative side of the evangelical aisle, World magazine has a TBN story in the works by Godbeat veteran Edward Plowman. Now, what will we see in Charisma?

Olsen noted that there is only one word to describe what is happening here — extortion. The court documents make that clear, along with a nasty allegation that the network was willing to write a second check to keep this out of the headlines. The accuser’s lawyer said TBN offered a mere $1 million. Ford’s lawyer thought $10 million sounded better. Olsen captures the mood:

$10 million! Simon & Schuster paid Hillary Clinton only $8 million for her memoir, Living History. GE chairman Jack Welch got $7 million for Straight from the Gut. That number isn’t about a book — it’s about keeping Ford’s story “out of the public view” — something Crouch had already paid $425,000 expressly to do.

This is true. But Olsen also makes this valid point:

this story isn’t yet to the level of the Jim Bakker or Jimmy Swaggart scandals of the 1980s. Both of those men were accused of breaking the law — Bakker for fraud related to time-shares, and Swaggart for prostitution. If the Crouch story is true (and the Times reports much evidence that it may be), the TBN head is guilty of having consensual sex with an employee. That’s immoral and unethical, but not criminal — especially in post-Monica America.

This is true. But we are also talking about one of the patriarchs of the global world of charismatic Christianity. People are going to talk — in all kinds of languages.

While reading between the lines of the Los Angeles Times story, I was reminded of what it was like doing off-the-record interviews during the Jim and Tammy era in Charlotte.

Olsen is right. The legal issues are the hooks that make the story valid. But in evangelical, charismatic and fundamentalist circles, it is the sexual politics that collapses the ministry’s tent. This is especially true if the allegations mention gay or bisexual conduct. An influential historian in these circles told me this.

“For most Pentecostal and charismatic people, the most serious questions about Jim Bakker were all those allegations of moral misconduct. … People haven’t forgotten that,” said historian Vinson Synan of Regent University in Virginia Beach, Va. “There does appear to have been a kind of subterranean, homosexual world inside PTL that has never been fully described. That’s where so many questions remain.”

When I was at the Charlotte News, I actually took several calls from the late John Wesley Fletcher, a spurned Bakker aide. This was clearly a case of one minister trying to blackmail another, not just for money but in an attempt to hurt his ministry. This was revenge and the plot was positively Byzantine. Here is a chunk of one of my columns on this.

In addition to his ties to Hahn, it was Fletcher who made anonymous calls in 1983 spreading dirt about Bakker. One of those calls went to me, when I was working as a religion writer in Charlotte, N.C., and I later shared my information with reporter Charles E. Shepard, author of “Forgiven: The Rise and Fall of Jim Bakker and the PTL Ministry.” Years later, Shepard confirmed that Fletcher was my mystery caller.

Fletcher mentioned Hahn by name in 1983 and also said David Taggart was Bakker’s lover. Fletcher was bitter and said Bakker had failed to keep promises and had forsaken him during tough times. But Fletcher did not, during those calls, say what he later said during the “Pearlygate” media storm — that he, too, had been sexually involved with Bakker.

“I never knew a more corrupt person in my life, period, than Jim Bakker,” Fletcher told me. “Now I see him for what he is.”

Well now, what should we look for in the TBN case? If this story is true, it will almost certainly not be an isolated case. Then there will be evidence of major charismatic and evangelical ministries distancing themselves from this already controversial network. And finally, watch for signs that Crouch is preparing for a sermon that proclaims, “I have sinned, I have repented and I have been healed.”

Above all, watch the cover of Charisma magazine. Why should the secular newspapers get to write all of the important stories about what happens inside conservative sanctuaries?

I have some problems with Ted Olsen’s article.

    He said:

“If the Crouch story is true (and the Times reports much evidence that it may be), the TBN head is guilty of having consensual sex with an employee. That’s immoral and unethical, but not criminal–especially in post-Monica America.”

`consensual adulterous homosexual sodomy with an employee” is more like it.

He also mentions that the accuser had served time for “statutory rape.” But he failed to mention that is was with a 17-year-old BOY. Why down play the homosexual facts of the story.

  • Cindy

Is `consensual adulterous homosexual sodomy with an employee” really a greater sin than `consensual adulterous heterosexual sex with an employee”? Is raping a boy worse than raping a girl?

The penalty for adultery – whether homo- or heterosexual – is the same in the Mosaic law.

  • Joshua Cordell

Sin is sin, no arguing that point. And sexual sin is sexual sin regardless of who is involved.

    But here are my points:

1, “consensual sex with an employee” sure sounds clean and almost like “ah..mistake but not that bad.” where as `consensual adulterous homosexual sodomy with an employee” is more honest.

2, The fact that it was a boy is a useful piece of information, because of the acusations.

  • Harris

I’m with Joshua here, the homosexual aspect is perhaps its most salient feature, especially to the secular press.

The long-standing critique of evangelicals is that of hypocrisy — they talk one game, but play another. In a day where the evangelical movement is focused so much on preserving marriage and castigating homosexuality, this event will be seen as only confirming the Evangelical hypocrisy, reinforcing the belief that Evangelicals are fundamentally about cultural power and not spiritual reality.

The best approach for Crouch would be repentence and retirement — a modeling of deportment.

  • http://blog.boydston.us Brad

Even if the story proves to have legitimate basis I suspect that it will generate a major collective yawn from the public because:

    1. “It’s just ANOTHER tele-evangelist — what do you expect?”

    2. Most people consider the whole TBN thing to be a nuthouse operation anyway.

    3. They’re not orthodox anything — evangelical, charismatic, fundamentalist, pentecostal…

    4. “The whole thing is just a part of a major Crouch script to draw attention to TBN.” The old all publicity is good publicity angle.

If the story generates any interest it will revolve around his wife. Excuse my cynicism but I can see the mascara running now.

  • David

“Then there will be evidence of major charismatic and evangelical ministries distancing themselves from this already controversial network. ”

If this is the case then the real scandal here is that it took an old fashioned sex scandal to make these various major charismatic and evangelical groups “wake up ” to the fact that being associated with TBN is bad news.

Adultry and homosexuality are serious sins , but not so much as the soul-endangering heresies that the Crouches and their fellow travelers have spewed out year after year . It is astounding that on something named the TRINITY Broadcasting Network there are “Oneness Pentecostals” who deny the Trinity and that these people have been embraced as “brothers in the Lord” by the Crouches and others on TBN . Then there’s the whole “Word Faith/Health ‘n’ Wealth Gospel” .

HERE IS THE BOTTOM LINE GUYS….FOR MOST CHRISTIANS THE LIFESYLE OF THE MESSENGER IS AN IMPORTANT ASPECT, HOWEVER THE VALUE OF THE NETWORK FOR THE WINNING OF SOULS INTO THE KINGDOM

AND THE SPREADING OF THE GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM IS FAR MORE IMPORTANT. REMEMBER, JESUS SAVED US, NOT PAUL CROUCH, HE SHED HIS BLOOD( SEE “THE PASSION”)

IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT.

AS FAR AS THIS HOOPLA ABOUT THE “PROSPERITY” MESSAGE…WHEN IS THE LAST TIME ANY OF YOU WENT IN TO THE STORE TO PAY FOR YOUR GROCERIES WITH

SCRIPTURES?…MONEY IS A FACT OF LIFE AND WHY SHOULD THE SINNER HAVE A COMFORTABLE LIFESTLYE

WHEN GOD PROMISES TO BLESS HIS PEOPLE. READ THE

OLD TESTAMENT AND YOU WILL SEE ALL OF GOD’S MAIN

    MEN ( ABRAHAM, DAVID, SOLOMON)

WERE VERY WEALTHY!! DID THIS MAKE THEM LESS SSPIRITUAL! GET REAL!! ANYONE WHO SPEAKS OUT AGAINST GOD BLESSING HIS CHILDREN FINANCIALLY HAS

JUST DISPLAYED HIS OR HER IGNORANCE ABOUT THE BIBLE. READ THE BOOK, NOT JUST THE PORTIONS THAT FIT YOUR THINKING AND YOU WILL DISCOVER THAT GOD IS IN THE BLESSING BUSINESS, IF YOU KEEP HIS COMMANMENTS.I CHALLENGE YOU TO CHECK IT OUT. AS FOR PAUL CROUCH, TIME WILL ALWAYS TELL THE STORY.

I WILL PRAY FOR HIM AND HIS FAMILY, AND I SUGGEST YOU DO THE SAME…AFTER ALL HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE NO SIN…CHECK THOSE SKELTONS IN YOUR OWN CLOSET!!!

  • Joshua Cordell

    B,

Read John 15:18-20. I don’t expect God to make me rich here on earth, my treasure is in Heaven and its not gold, it is fellowship with the King of Kings. Jesus lived a humble live here on earth, and I am His servant so I’m not looking to Him for riches.

Try your little sales pitch on the church in China and Africa, I guess they just don’t have enough FAITH, that is why they are dieing poor!

TBN has been spreading a false gospel and has put itself above correction from the body of Christ for as long as I can remember.

  • B

NOBODY SHOULD BE ABOVE CORRECTION, NOT EVEN TBN… AND NOBODY SHOULD BELIEVE “EVERYTHING “ANY BODY SAYS, NO PREACHER HAS ALL THE ANSWERS AND IF THEY CLAIM THEY DO , I WILL BE THE FIRST ONE OUT THE DOOR!!… READ IT FOR YOURSELF!!, GOD PROMISES HIS PEOPLE BLESSING IF THEY ARE OBEDIENT, I CAN SHOW SO MANY SCRIPTURES IN THE BIBLE THAT SUPPORT THAT AND IF IT WILL HELP SOMEBODY , I WILL LIST SCRIPTURE AND VERSE. PLUS , I AM A LIVING WITNESS, I HAVE BEEN HOMELESS TWICE , I AM NO STRANGER TO POVERTY. BUT THE WORD OF GOD SUPPORTS BLESSING HIS PEOPLE AND I AM NOW ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE, BUT IT WAS THROUGH OBEDIENCE TO GOD’S WORD …IT IS NO MAGIC!!, IT IS A PROCESS AND A LIFESTYLE.. THAT IS WHERE SOME MAY BE MISSING IT AND MIS-INTERPERTING GOD’S WORD. AND ALSO THE HEART OF A MAN IS KEY…THE ONLY REASON FOR WEALTH IS TO BE AN EXTENSION OF GOD’S HANDS IN THE EARTH REALM. EVERY YEAR I FILL MY TRUCK UP AND TAKE 20 TURKEYS TO THE POOR AND MANY TIMES DURING THE YEAR I WILL GO TO COSTCO’S AND SPEND SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS ON FOOD AND TAKE IT TO THE HOMELESS SHELTER… ISN’T THIS WHAT GOD COMMANDS US TO DO ?? ATTEND TO THE NEEDS OF OUR HURTING BROTHERS AND SISTERS!!! BUT IF I AM “BROKE” I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO REACH OUT TO MY BROTHERS IN A TANGIBLE WAY. MUCH LESS SEND ANYTHING TO AFRICA . SO JUST REMEMBER, FORGET TBN

GOD WILL JUDGE HIS PEOPLE…AND GET IN THE WORD FOR YOURSELF, LET GOD SHOW YOU HIS WORD AND OPEN UP YOUR HEART TO RECEIVE. ASK GOD TO SHOW YOU WHAT HIS WILL IS…TAKE NO MAN’S WORD FOR IT..ASK FOR YOURSELF.

All I know is, that every living human being makes mistakes in some way or another, and there is not one living being that can say for any given amount of time, that they have always followed the ten commandments. We all do things that are not right, some smoke cigarretes, some drink alcohol, put un-pure things into their body, take drugs to kill the pain of their depression, feelings of pain, to put their mind at ease, sexual desires whether it be hetero or homo or what have you, every one sins and some sins are worse than others, and anyone who states that they do not are the most hipocritical that come, or you are not in your right mind. If the man made a mistake, let him say his apologies and let him be, IF, and I emphasize IF,he made a mistake that happened 6 years ago or more. Who cares, just due to the fact that the man is a leader of Christianity and has been for years, I have pictures of him and his wife with my grandfather in Jerusalem before I was born and I am in my 30′s, you can not account for how many the two of them along with the network have brought more people to christianity than any other being on this earth, and for the many years they have done so and been successful, to where they could retire and pass the torch, but do they need to, NO, they are the best at what they do and let them continue it, LET IT PASS!

  • stephanie

If these allegations turn out to be fact, he needs to step down. I believe one of the criteria to be a Bishop/ pastor was for him to be blameless(not sinless)

When was the last time any one has actually heard the GOSPEL preached on TBN?

Also, why is it necessary to have a praise a thon and beg poor people for money when all of the millionares are right there on stage? I think they ought to pracrice what they are preaching. Since God is in the business of 100 fold return, why aren’t they giving. Can you imagine what the return would be for them? They don’t even believe what they are saying.

As far as I’m concerned, you don’t need a dime if you live in a 5 million dollar house. You know, come to think of it, how much work for the Lord could they do if they downsized and lived a little more modest? How many of the lil’ ol’ grandmothers could they help?!

  • Joyce Harris

I believe God will expose all these merchandisers of the gospel.God is in control and He will put down whom he wills and raise up whom He wills. I pray how soon all the merchansisers of the gsopel are brought to light.

I am totally disgusted at this whole story. I have respected Paul Crouch since I was born and now I am 37 years old and I see God has used him tremendously in reaching the entire World billions of people to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. I pray that this whole story does not kill Paul Crouch at 70 years old, how much can a man take? Dear Jesus, please bring the truth to the surface and have Paul Crouch admit the truth if it true. If this is not true, Lord Jesus, please let all the gossip and lies just die and dissappear. This man Paul Crouch has been given an important duty to fulfill by God and has done his best. All the money and what is spent wisely or unwisely will be judged by God. To whom much is given, much is required! God will require Paul Crouch to answer honestly and loyally to his family and to the entire Church Body as a whole. Paul Crouch if you are reading this, please tell us the truth, don’t let these stories be told without us hearing the truth from YOUR HEART! Please, You have been given such a HUGE Ministry as a gift, God wants you to give to people who need it, not give to people like this man Ford and waste money on things like this. Start investing your money wisely and stop spending it on things like Gold chairs and overly elegant buildings and landscaping. Remember when you first started TBN and a man came and gave you a check for $20,000.00? Remember how simple your life was then and how humble you were, this is where God wants you to be now. Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord and he will lift you up. Dear Jesus, please help our world and we pray for Paul Crouch and for him to totally be honest with us and clear up this mess. If you are guilty of these accusations Paul Crouch, please tell us and move on in repentance with a humble heart. Your ministry to the world is at stake and the truth needs to be told. If this is untrue, please tell what really happened and ask the entire world for forgiveness and then move on to what God has called you to accomplish, there is so much more God has for you to finish!

    JOyce, Lisa,

I could not agree more with your comments. You know, all the blame for following the merchandisers can not be put solely on them. If we were not so Bible illiterate, these busters(excuse me) would have a much harder time getting over on people. The only thing that combats a lie is the Truth. “thy word oh God is truth”. I don’t claim to be a seasoned saint and know the Bible from front to back, but I have read enough to know when Paul and the rest of the money hungry ministers are twisting the word of God.

I think one of the best ones I’ve heard yet was”make your pledge and send in your atonement offering.”( this one I heard on Daystar last week) Who in the world would fall for that? Christ is our atonement for sin!

My advice to everyone. READ, READ, READ, MEDITATE,MEDITATE ON THE WORD OF GOD. THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL LEAD AND GUIDE INTO ALL TRUTH!

  • T.J. Beckman

This is the end of the age and everything and everyone CAN and WILL BE SHAKEN. I pray this story has no TRUTH to it, but if it does…God have mercy upon Paul Crouch. Juanita Bynum is preaching on Daystar about imputed righteousness…Right on sister….we can no longer “play church”…..lay prostrate before His Holiness…..Florida is experiencing “sinners in the hand of an angry God”. Our wickedness can no longer go up. The Lord’s nostrils are overflowing……..homosexual sin is GRAVE and GRAVE CONSEQUENCES WILL FOLLOW……righteousness and holiness let these govern our lives……all over washington republicans are being “outed”…everything hidden will be revealed…GOD WILL HAVE HIS WAY…May the truth come out and be known.

    AMEN!!!! T.J.

My husband was a preacher who preached against halloween, and yet had an affair with his own brothers wife the day i gave birth to our 4th child, he is on his 3rd marriage, my son now 21 was 9 at the time and I took him to trick or treat to remember the great memories i had a a kid, he stopped and had a panic attack, saying what is worse me eating a candy bar or dad sleeping with auntie??? that is the day i went back to my home church, we went to see tammy and jim in 1986 and they sold shirts in the Goody Barn that had a playboy bunny on it, my brother confornted the worker and she stated she did not make them she just sells them, aslo the rooms we adhered with cash were not available when we arrived, and we were sent to camp in a tent, after we had 5 of us! and rented 2 rooms

  • Mashola Maubo

This so mind blowing, but i m appealing to all true believers out there that there is noone who is perfect in this world. Let us learn to forgive eachother’s mistakes and learn to embrace one another in times of trials and temptations. I do not base my faith in God upon what man does but upon the one on one relationship i have with the Lord. Forgive and let there be healing in the land.

  • Bob J.

May I raise an important issue relative to sexual scandal and why individuals who bear awesome responsibility before God fall as the Bakers and Rev.Swaggert. The key word would be “accountability”! Any organization from the smallest to a monolith like TBN will always be vulnerable when their basic structure lacks accountability from those at the top. Christians who lead the many need devout people around them to keep them on track. How often do you hear this concept being hammered over and over instead of sermons pointing us to wealth or threatening prayers against real or perceived enemies of truth? In a world such as we presently live in there are a multitude of temptations our parents were not even faced with. If your sexual desires are out of control do you seek help from a Christian therapist who specializes in such matters? Or maybe a Pastor with a specialty in marital problems. Or do you just say I need to pray harder and read and recite more scripture? We need to seek help from those we have chosen (in wisdom) to be accountable to, so that we never get to the point where we go into a tailspin and provide the unbeliever with another reason to mock God’s name. Does this sound too solemn? After his sin with Bathsheba David faced irreversable consequences. The child she was carrying would not be spared from the shadow of death and in addition to this he was warned that a sword would arise out of his own home. Remember Absalom? The word of the Lord through the prophet Nathan was “…because by doing this you have made the enemies of the Lord show utter contempt”. I do not say here that Mr.Crouch is guilty. But if the cost in terms of damage to the ministry of TBN is as real as some fear then he must consider stepping aside. There is much to be risked if denial of the accusations fail to convince the millions who follow this ministry. I was at one time a great admirer of Jimmy Swaggert. I knew of no one in all my exposure to the preaching by giants of the scriptures who ever preached more effectively against the use of alcohol than Jimmy. The message was true, but the messenger was loaded down with his sins. I live less than 15 miles from Indio, the place where he solicited a woman who was even recognized by the officer who stopped him! “How the mighty have fallen!” All Christians would do well to consider the pre-emptive benefit of a structure of accountability in each of our circles of association.GOD HELP US!
