Black Friday Greed And Consumerism: What Thanksgiving Is All About? (VIDEO) November 27, 2015

I want you to watch this video and think about the people who just attacked a child and each other for what appears to be a vegetable steamer. Somewhere in that same city on yesterday, these people gathered around a table and thanked God for all of His blessings.

I’m sure some of them thought about the important things in life such as family, friends, love and, perhaps, fulfilment. Each of them reflected on the many things for which they were grateful. That was yesterday.

Today is Black Friday. Those same people who thanked God for His tangible and intangible blessings were turned into rabid consumers willing to wrestle a vegetable steamer out of the hands of a child.

But I won’t put too much emphasis on the woman that stole from the child. I want to focus on all of the people in the video. Honestly, I want to focus on all of us. Too many of us have been transformed into consumerist zombies who mindlessly chase after our uncontrollable desire for poorly made products that will be tossed aside in only a few days.

We have been trained, as a nation, to immediately change our day of thanks into a day of greed and consumerism that rivals football players diving after a fumbled ball.

This begs the question: is our day of thanks one of sincerity or is it merely manufactured to usher us into the rabid consumerism of the holiday season. Are our prayers of thanks as cheaply manufactured as the vegetable steamer in this video such that we can toss it away within 24hours like we will throw away many of the gifts purchased today?

I don’t know. What I do know, however, is that this mindless consumerism is exactly what companies who make cheap products with the aid of cheap, overseas labor require to keep us purchasing throughout the holiday season. And when the products purchased today are tossed aside or thrown away, we’ll all be rested, refreshed, and reflective after another day of thanks prepares us for the next Black Friday.
