GrowMama Dialogues: Is Gun Control the Answer?

When I heard the news of the second largest school shooting in our history, I am certain my reaction was not unique. Immediately I was shaking with fear for my loved ones, terrified for the world they will inherit from us.As the day progressed, my core beliefs regarding gun control surfaced. I am a believer in the necessity of weapons for personal protection and as a deterrent. That being said, if I'm not allowed somewhere carrying a gun, it makes sense to ensure that no one else will be … [Read more...]

A Mother’s Protest

I have been watching in dismay at the response of some Muslims worldwide to the ridiculous movie posted online mocking our beloved Prophet (S).  This sadness is a feeling that I have noticed is widely shared in the American Muslim community. I protest and condemn, in the strongest terms, the violence, death, aggression and injustice that have all resulted. This is probably the exact reaction that the movie maker could only dream to have garnered. So, who has now painted a worse picture of the … [Read more...]

Acts of Righteousness

As Muslim parents, we always look for ways to build positive characteristics in our children. In America, the problem of homelessness and hunger - while it is an issue - is not as obvious as in other parts of the world. For many children, the problem of hunger is hidden - something they can't see or experience. Sometimes our children ask for material items - more games, more videos, etc. - and cannot relate to the fact that some children their age are less fortunate. We may respond to them by … [Read more...]

In Remembrance of a Life

Cleaning out my closet, I reach up to the top shelf and my hand hits a bag. I pull the bag down and reach in to see what’s inside and pull out a periwinkle-colored scarf. I hold the scarf in my hand and stare at it with a small smile. Whisper-thin, light as air, yet within the folds of that scarf there is a story, and within that story is a life.2003. My wedding day is fast approaching. After several months of looking and trying on and being dissatisfied, I find the perfect wedding outfit: a … [Read more...]

A House Concert

We recently attended a house concert by singer Dawud Wharnsby, hosted by our friends who graciously opened up their living room to more than twenty families. The radiant atmosphere and top-notch entertainment were second only to the faces of children rapt with attention.I'll try hard not to gush here, but our family was touched by the evening. It was refreshing to finally meet the down-to-earth, gentle entertainer who can make the audience laugh and sing and cry within the span of a few … [Read more...]

The Luxury of Choice

One of the basic attitudes a Muslim tries to embody is that obedience to Allah (swt) is a blessing from Allah (swt). We are not doing any favors to Allah by obeying Him; rather, we are honored by being allowed to be in His obedience. Feeling arrogant in our obedience is a trick of Shaitan, from which we ask protection.Sometimes I wonder, however, if we carry this attitude to other things beyond acts of obedience – praying, fasting… you know, the Islamic and religious “stuff.” Do we carry this … [Read more...]
