The Ultimate Reliance

Whimper, whimper. I look up from the onions sautéing on the stove to see Ibrahim, my fourteen-month-old baby, holding a sandwich bag in one hand and a large T-fal frying pan in the other. With intense concentration, he attempts to force the pan into the small bag—an impossible task. Once, twice, three times. He keeps trying. Finally, he turns to me with pleading brown eyes that ask me to help him.Stifling back laughter, a thought strikes me: Ibrahim thinks I can do anything. Whenever he fi … [Read more...]

Balancing Parental Discipline

An Imperfect Effort

It’s the middle of the night and I am attempting to complete an advent calendar for my son.  This Ramadan, for the very first time, my son will be fasting a few hours each day inshaAllah.  To encourage him, I decided to create a calendar that would contain treats for him to have with Iftar. I hope you’re not imagining a beautiful, hand crafted work of art.  Our advent calendar is a simple cut out of a crescent moon and star on which 30 plastic baby food containers have been glued and number … [Read more...]

The Ninety-Nine Names of Allah Tree

As the new school year begins and a shift of seasons takes place,  my girls and I decided to make a tree with the ninety-nine names of Allah adorned on the leaves. It is a simple and beautiful project, and a wonderful learning opportunity. As we glued the names on the leaves we discussed what the different names of Allah meant and tried to give examples. In Islam we do not have images of Allah, but through these beautiful names we can gain a better understanding of who He is. By encouraging them … [Read more...]
