Pick Up Your Broken Heart

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, declared that indeed, “The Muslim Ummah is like one body. If the eye is in pain then the whole body is in pain and if the head is in pain then the whole body is in pain.” We find ourselves in collective pain as current world events are breaking the hearts of millions around the country. We are witnessing unbearable levels of suffering that our generation has never before faced. The list is long: Palestine, Burma, Iraq, Syria, CAR, and many more. Fa … [Read more...]

Where My Inspiration Lives

One of my goals for my visit to my family this past summer was to just be around them. Not to see fancy sites or attend weddings, but to sit among them, be with them, and get some fresh perspective. To that end, I was blessed to spend the day with my grandmothers today. I was able to pray Fajr (pre-dawn prayer) on time for the first time in a while (ugh, jet lag!), which was a great start to the day. I know better than to miss Fajr, but praying on time depends little on setting an alarm and more … [Read more...]

A Mother’s Protest

I have been watching in dismay at the response of some Muslims worldwide to the ridiculous movie posted online mocking our beloved Prophet (S).  This sadness is a feeling that I have noticed is widely shared in the American Muslim community. I protest and condemn, in the strongest terms, the violence, death, aggression and injustice that have all resulted. This is probably the exact reaction that the movie maker could only dream to have garnered. So, who has now painted a worse picture of the … [Read more...]

Shopping For Good Deeds

“Who is this for? We don’t want this. Take it back.” The words fell upon my ears like a smack in the face. I was expecting to hear duas and praises to Allah when Ramadan groceries showed up at the doorstep of this needy family. Instead, I was shocked, confused, and hurt upon being turned away and unwelcomed. Why did this happen? Ya Hayyu, ya Qayyumu, bi-rahmatika astaghith. O the Living, O the Eternal, I seek help by Your grace. I believe I had good intentions. I took care to think thoughtfully a … [Read more...]

You Can Make the Most of Ramadan

It’s Ramadan! I didn’t need to tell you that, but maybe you needed a reminder. You’re not fasting (either you are pregnant or nursing), and with kids in tow you can’t commit to extra prayers in the masjid. The stillness and focus in your prayer is now replaced with incessant needs and cries of your babies. You spend hours in the kitchen preparing the meals and taking care of the needs of your kids and guests, with little time left over for reciting Qur'an. Everyone around you is reaching higher l … [Read more...]

Off beat

This past year Maryam has been transitioning from a toddler to a preschooler. This past year I came to appreciate how easy toddlers are to deal with. With her opinion becoming more audible, our daily activities involve striking some deal or another.“Maryam we need to brush your teeth, it’s almost bedtime.”“No! I want yogurt!”“Okay, we’ll eat yogurt first but then brush your teeth, deal?”“Deal.”We are each practicing the art of negotiation, but it gets extremely frustrating whe … [Read more...]
