Growmama Roundup: Ramadan Traditions

We asked our GrowMama writers this question:  What are your family Ramadan traditions? S writes: " On the eve of Ramadan we bake crescent cookies with the children. That's their first Ramadan smell. As a family we put up some Ramadan decorations. I've collected some of their Ramadan crafts over the years and I hang them up around the house along with some white flowered garlands that I bought from Michael's. The kids love to see their old crafts. About an hour before sunset, we sit as a … [Read more...]

Sadness, Depression, and Prophet Musa (as)

I was sitting at home a while ago, the third day into the Snowmageddon of 2010, the third day of not really talking to anyone but my two little ones, with the husband traveling and trips to my parents’ home eliminated because of the grand storm. I tend to get a bit sad, depressed when I'm alone like that, but alhamdulillah I was holding up fairly well during those days. A few nights later, I was trying to memorize some lines from Surat al Qasas, and read over the story of Prophet Moses (as) … [Read more...]

My Struggle With Infertility II

It was lost for sure. But I said the dua anyway. “O Allah, You are the One who brings people to a Day of which there is no doubt, so bring back to me what I have lost.” … [Read more...]

Frustrated?

Did you ever get frustrated, angry and started shouting at your kids? I used to do so, sometimes, followed by a feeling of tremendous guilt. I knew what I was doing was wrong but I didn’t know what to do, I didn’t know how to direct this energy. I tried many techniques to calm down, sometimes it worked and sometimes not. Then I heard a lecture by Sheikh Sudais [Imam of the Holy Mosque in Mecca], where he told mothers to watch what they say to their kids when they get angry. He mentioned a … [Read more...]

Disciplinary Technique: 1, 2, 3 Magic!

Every parent has their own techniques for discipline, but here is a humorous tale about the “magic” of counting to three that you may find useful. Black, black and more black!  Black seemed to be the only colour choice for Fatima’s three and a half year old daughter, Jameela. Day after day, the little girl vigorously scribbled until her colouring book was covered with a thick, waxy build up of black crayon.  Fatima sat with her little girl, and offered other colours.  She even tried … [Read more...]
