Pick Up Your Broken Heart

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, declared that indeed, “The Muslim Ummah is like one body. If the eye is in pain then the whole body is in pain and if the head is in pain then the whole body is in pain.” We find ourselves in collective pain as current world events are breaking the hearts of millions around the country. We are witnessing unbearable levels of suffering that our generation has never before faced. The list is long: Palestine, Burma, Iraq, Syria, CAR, and many more. Fa … [Read more...]

A Letter to Ramadan

I had just finished putting the baby down for his nap sheepishly awaiting some scream free time when my four year old exclaimed, “What can we do now?” It's her most oft repeated question and it often feels like my well has run dry of ideas. I gave her a blank stare for about a minute and thought to myself that I can sit her in front of the computer and have her play a PBS kids game or really try to take advantage of the moment. I started towards the construction paper and told her we'd write a le … [Read more...]

There is no doubt that there is a special blessing in Ramadan that facilitates … [Read more...]

Transitions

Rabb ishrahlee sadree. Rabb ishrahlee sadree. Oh, Allah expand my chest.  Musa was asking his Lord, the Knower of all and the Giver of good to give him that which would be beneficial in his preparation to meet the most powerful man on the planet, Pharaoh.  Before he asked for his brother Haroon to be his aid, before he asked for an easy path, before asking to untie the knot that impedes his ability to speak eloquently, he asked for an expansive chest. As one chapter closes in my life and an … [Read more...]

Facebook and The Book

About three years ago I was taking a class at the Hartford Seminary titled, “Answering the Big Questions: An Approach Towards Philosophical Theology.” It was taught by the former dean of the Seminary, Dr. Ian Markham. It was a thought provoking class especially since it was taught from a belief in God perspective (as opposed to the philosophy courses I took as an undergraduate). Towards the end of the semester we spoke about eschatology, or how our faith traditions view the end of time. Of cou … [Read more...]
