The Pacifier

The Pacifier. Yes, I capitalized the P. Where do I begin? My son hated it the day he was born. On day two, while getting circumcised, the doctor was trying to force it to stay in his mouth. I guess other baby boys don’t scream during the procedure. I thought the doctor was going to tape it over his mouth. My son must’ve gotten the point, because he suddenly took it. And kept it. Nineteen months later, I’m trying to take it away now.Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like it’s always in his mouth. S … [Read more...]

Lending Libraries

When I was twelve years old, we moved from a village in the country into a house in town. We lived right on the main street, which was called, surprise, surprise, Main Street! I was very happy to finally have a room of my own, and I was going to be allowed to walk to school. What bliss for a young girl! But the best thing of all was that the public library was just a few blocks from our house, and I could walk there whenever I wanted. I loved that library. Time.Every time I learn to be satisfied with what I have, Allah gives me better.I remember the first time I felt unhappy and dissatisfied was after I graduated from high school, and, as a non-Saudi living in Saudi Arabia, was not accepted into the university in Jeddah. The only option I saw in front of me was to study in a Qurán school. Oh God, I thought, this is the place all the old ladies and high school dropouts come to in the mornings. It’s not a place for someone who … [Read more...]

Disciplinary Technique: 1, 2, 3 Magic!

Every parent has their own techniques for discipline, but here is a humorous tale about the “magic” of counting to three that you may find useful.Black, black and more black!  Black seemed to be the only colour choice for Fatima’s three and a half year old daughter, Jameela. Day after day, the little girl vigorously scribbled until her colouring book was covered with a thick, waxy build up of black crayon.  Fatima sat with her little girl, and offered other colours.  She even tried to colour … [Read more...]

Who Made This?

My daughter often reminds me that sometimes adults think too much for their own good.“Prove that God exists.” This challenge is laid before those who believe in Allah. Many have, but no hard and fast proof exists. If it did exist, belief in, and acceptance of, Allah (swt) would not be rewarded and considered morally good. This is why belief is no longer accepted once the major signs of the Day of Judgment begin – when physical proof of the existence of Allah is made clear. And if there was “p … [Read more...]
