On not being shocked by shit believers say

I never got into doing the “look at this horrible thing some religious believer said” posts. Mainly, I think, because I have such low expectations for them. The world would be a terrifying place to live in if religious believers were always 100% consistent about their religious beliefs. So instead of being enraged when they say something horrible, I walk around in a constant state of amazement that the more conservative types manage to get anything right. Case in point: Rick Santorum recently said he would discourage his daughter from having an abortion, even if the pregnancy was the result of rape.

My reaction to this is “well duh.” Once you accept the crazy premise that a single fertilized egg cell is a person with the same rights as any other person, having an abortion after being raped is no more acceptable than killing a five-year-old that was the product of rape. Instead of beating up on the Rick Santorums of the world, I prefer to look at the Muslims who claim to believe that martyrs get in to the highest level of heaven, tell survey-takers that suicide bombings are sometimes justified, and yet refrain from becoming suicide bombers–I prefer to look at them and think, “way to go, guys.”

Having low expectations for everyone may sound like a pessimistic mindset, but honestly I think it’s great, since everyone is constantly exceeding your expectations.
