Friday recap: arguments for the existence of God, Chris Mooney, and more!

I’m going to experiment with doing weekly recap posts. This is partly because I got more blogging done than usual this week, including four posts on Wednesday, and people not used to that may have missed some things. Are these worth doing? Let me know what you think. But without further ado: [Read more...]

Tweaking the “beta testing a book” project

After thinking about it a bit, I’ve decided the “force myself to post a chapter every week” strategy was not the best one. Instead, I’m simply going to things as I write them – usually by posting subsections as blog posts. These smaller posts will not generally be marked for what they are, though often [Read More...]

Videobloggers!

Freethought blogs is not home to not one, not two, not three, but four video bloggers! Namely, Thunderf00t, Zinnia Jones, Christina Rad, and Aaron Ra. This is apparently a huge deal. In fact, I’m a little embarrassed to be not previously aware of these people. [Read more...]

Comment policy

I moderate comments lightly. This is a conscious choice I’ve made. As best I can recall, I’ve never banned anyone in close to seven years of blogging (though I definitely threatened someone with banning once). And even lesser forms of moderation I don’t do all that much. But I do have a few rules I’d [Read More...]

Message to everyone who came to this blog because of the DJ Grothe controversy

My post defending DJ Grothe is now, by a significant margin, the most-read post in the history of (this incarnation of) this blog. I have mixed feelings about this. I’m glad I said what I said and that so many people read it, but (while it’s not the first time I’ve done so) commenting on fights within [Read More...]

“I want to copy and paste the whole chapter and write, ‘This!’”

I know this is patting myself on the back, but I still decided to quote this comment on the draft of the first chapter of my book: This is probably not helpful but I want to copy and paste the whole chapter and write, “This!” I look forward to reading the rest, and to buying [Read More...]

Out of the hospital

Still not feeling great because, headache, and oh yeah an appendectomy involves making holes in your abdominal muscles, which you use way more than you realize.  This means I won’t be returning to work until next week, which paradoxically may mean I get a lot of writing (including, but not limited to, blogging) done this [Read More...]

In the hospital

Yesterday, I was hospitalized with appendicitis. I expect to be here another two or three days. Blogging will be difficult until I get out, though I may at least be able to schedule one or two things I’ve got mostly written. Expect a return to your regularly-scheduled blogging on Thursday, though I don’t really know. [Read More...]

Beta testing a book: Chris’ crazy idea about how to write a book in the 21st century

A long time ago I decided that when I finally finished writing my book, I would make it available as an ebook on a pay-what-you-want basis (where “pay-what-you-want” means “even $0″). There are a couple reasons for doing this. The first is purely selfish. As Cory Doctorow likes to say, most creative types suffer more [Read More...]
