Writing, organization, and giant balls of dog hair

nancy french novel photo

Fellow Patheos blogger Nancy French posted a photo today of her novel in progress, note cards spread across the table in perfect organization as she works on plotting her story.  As a writer always working on book and article ideas, all I could think when I saw the photo was … man, she's got a clean house. Where are the paw prints on the table? Where’s the cat rearranging the notecards while the dog is shredding couch pillows? I'm always amazed to see other writers' creative … [Read more...]

A year of animals, blogging and Patheos

Bandit, Bailey and Scout, summer 2011. A year later, two dogs are still here, and they can't be left alone together in the same room.

I was excited this week to receive a notecard in the mail from the staff at Patheos, congratulating me on my one year anniversary blogging about animals and faith. Really? A whole year? Where did the time go? I love writing here. The columnists, bloggers and editors have been kind and welcoming, and I love hearing from readers who have shared photos, shared thoughts and engaged in discussions on a variety of animal-related topics. It's been a nice change from my decade-plus experience … [Read more...]

Scientists use MRI to see what Fido is thinking

What do you think Bandit is thinking right now?

There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t look at my quirky Border collie, Bandit, and say, “I wish I knew what you were thinking right now.” My guess is that, if you have dogs, you often think the same thing. Well, researchers at Emory University have found a way to study what’s going on in Fido’s brain with what is likely the first functional MRI performed on a dog. In this kind of brain scan, dogs were studied while they were awake and unrestrained – no sedation, no … [Read more...]

Manatees visit Ft. Lauderdale beach (video)

Imagine heading to the beach for a day of fun in the sun, and being joined by an invasion of manatees. That's what happened to beachgoers on Sunday, when several sea cows swam into the shallow waters at Ft. Lauderdale Beach. Video taken by Craig Hossack and posted on YouTube has gone viral, giving even us landlubbers a rare glimpse of the beauty of the sea. Hossack says on his YouTube page that, "It appears as if there were multiple males wresting for the affection of one female." The … [Read more...]

Pet foods recalled due to Salmonella outbreak at Diamond Pet Foods

Diamond Naturals Lamb Meal & Rice dry dog food tested positive for Salmonella, as did Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Adult Light Formula dry dog food and Diamond Puppy Formula dry dog food.

It's been a busy day here at The Funny Farm as I've been trying to keep up with the recalls of dog (and now cat) foods associated with Diamond Pet Foods. It started last month when the company recalled their dry Lamb Meal and Rice formula after a bag tested positive for Salmonella. Diamond Puppy Formula dry dog food and Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Adult Light Formula dry dog food also tested positive. Other recalls soon followed as a precaution. Right now, the pet food … [Read more...]

Washington Capital’s defenseman Karl Alzner’s dogs make a pretty, Twitter-worthy mess

Karl Alzner's dogs weren't happy about the Washington Capital's loss. They were just happy to show off their handiwork!

After a marathon triple overtime loss to the New York Rangers on Wednesday, Washington Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner headed home, and was greeted by his dogs - who had a little surprise for him: Alzner tweeted the photo early Thursday morning (1:57 a.m, to be exact), with the message, "Dogs not happy about the loss either." Poor Alzner. I didn't see the game and can't imagine how exhausted he was when he opened his front door. But you know that those dogs were so happy to have him … [Read more...]

Celebrate birdsong on International Dawn Chorus Day, May 6, 2012

Our little village yard is abundant with birds

My friend Mike is a morning show producer here in town. He told me once that he leaves for work around 4 a.m. and he's always surprised at the  number of birds chirping at the hour of the morning. In total darkness. I think he used the word "eerie" to describe it. Back when Scout was sick and we were up every hour or so all night long, I got to hear what he was talking about. Three in the morning, and Scout and I would  be in the backyard, he not sure what he wanted to do or where, me … [Read more...]

Seneca Park Zoo celebrates first artificial insemination of polar bears

It takes a whole team to make a polar bear pregnant! (The polar bear artificial insemination team; photo Kelli O'Brien)

I love being able to shine light on my wonderful hometown of Rochester, NY and today there's super news that makes animal history: The Seneca Park Zoo, in partnership with the Cincinnati Zoo's Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife (CREW),  is celebrating the first successful artificial insemination of polar bears in the world. Aurora and Zero, the Seneca Park Zoo's polar bear couple, have been together for two years without any cubs to show for it. And while the bears are … [Read more...]
