Fight for Lennox the dog nears the end

Lennox is scheduled to die tomorrow. In fact, he may already be dead, since he's in Northern Ireland and it's already tomorrow there. Lennox has been imprisoned for almost two years. Not because he committed a crime. Not because he broke the law. He's been held because of the way he looks.Lennox is a dog. And to the officials at the Belfast, Ireland City Council, Lennox looks like a pit bull, which in their eyes makes him a dangerous dog.Never mind that Lennox is not a pit bull; he's a 7- … [Read more...]

Help name the Seneca Park Zoo’s new lions

Zero the polar bear. His mate Aurora prefers solitude. Let's hope it's because she's expecting!

My husband and I visited the Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, NY a few weeks ago to see the new Step Into Africa exhibit. Everyone has been talking about it.I love the zoo. Over the last decade or so, the Seneca Park Zoo has really made some fabulous changes. I'm a huge fan of the otters, and I could spend hours watching them frolic and slide and swim. I especially love the Rocky Coast exhibit, with the wonderful polar bear habitat and the sea lion pools. What a change from the zoo of my chi … [Read more...]

Just another day at the Funny Farm (video)

Regular readers of my columns and personal blog (ie: my friends and family) know there's a reason I've dubbed my house "the funny farm." Not only do I write humor ... it's just madness over here. Disorganization, clutter and chaos. And that's just me. Add in the animals and it's a non-stop barrel of fun. (No, I don't have a monkey, but that would be fun, wouldn't it?)So I thought you'd enjoy this little video I captured of our rescue pup Bailey. I think she learned this trick from the … [Read more...]

There's a hot controversy stirring here in my hometown of Rochester, NY. I confess I'm late coming to the story, being wrapped up as I am in family tree research. But I've finally had time to catch up and ... well, it's quite a story. Here's what happened.Last Friday, June 2, two Monroe County Sheriff deputies responded to a call at a home in the Rochester suburb of Perinton, NY. News reports say the officers were responding to a call for a car blocking a driveway at the home of Gary … [Read more...]

Writing, organization, and giant balls of dog hair

nancy french novel photo

Fellow Patheos blogger Nancy French posted a photo today of her novel in progress, note cards spread across the table in perfect organization as she works on plotting her story. As a writer always working on book and article ideas, all I could think when I saw the photo was … man, she's got a clean house. Where are the paw prints on the table? Where’s the cat rearranging the notecards while the dog is shredding couch pillows?I'm always amazed to see other writers' creative process, especi … [Read more...]
